URGENT: LEAVE COSTA RICA W/O BIKE?
I need to leave Costa Rica for an emergency and can find no information of what I would need to do to leave the bike and fly out. It is Saturday so there is no way to speak to anyone in the government. As far as I understand they will not let you leave without the vehicle.

I just looked at my passport from last year's trip and CR did not stamp my bike into the passport. If that's true of you as well, seems to me, if you just left, they would have no way of knowing that you had a bike in country. Of course you would have to come back and exit with the bike before the time limit on your vehicle permit ran out. Not strictly by the book, but it might work.

I left my bike for 7 months in costa rica last year, a friend also did the same. i had no hassle leaving or returning to the country. the only problem i had was my import permit was out of date on return. i crossed into panama via a pedestrian border (forget the name of it now but will look it up and get back to you if you need the info) and rode down the panamanian side of the frontier to the main crossing and did paperwork there. they can fine you 500us and some more in tax but you can get out without paying this. my friend crossed up on the atlantic coast into panama and ended up paying 20us in bribes. hope this info helps, mail me if you need more
good luck oz |
fellas thanks a lot for the advice... I'd never have thought of just looking at my passport because I am so used to ALL countries putting the vehicle info in the passport... but you are right... no vehicle info for CR! Fantastic, this saves me a major headache. s ------------------ Steven 2001 KLR650 Cozumel, Mexico |

Rich, I have the bike in storage right now. Don't want to rent it, sorry. If you have two months you should ride down. S |
