Yucatan/Central America: need a chain & sprockets
 

I'm currently in the Yucatan (Campeche), headed south. My countershaft sprocket is almost completely stripped of teeth. I'm having trouble finding a chain, let alone a sprocket set. Can anyone provide help with this? It's a Suzuki VStrom, so a shop that has bigger Suzukis can probably help- either because they have it in stock or they can order it with decent turnaround. I just don't know any, and my limited Spanish skills keep me from calling on the phone.

If you're heading south to Guatemala, and if your chain & sprocket can make it, there's a good Suzuki dealership over there.

You can call ahead to make sure they have the parts: (502) 2420-2100 ask for Oscar Quintanilla, he speaks English...

You should be able to find parts in Campeche or Merida. Or they can get them for you within a few days. The Strom is a current model sold in the larger cities in Mexico.
There ain't squat between Campeche and Guatemala. I'd say stay put and work with sources there.

I checked in with the dealers here in Campeche, didn't have any luck- but didn't find an actual Suzuki dealer, either. I'm thinking I'll send a chain and sprocket set to Guatemala City, since there is a good Suzuki dealer there (thanks bmr39). I should be able to make it that far :-)

I am surprised there is no Suzuki dealership in Campeche but give some thought to Merida if you don't have luck in Campeche. You may enjoy the ride down south a bit more knowing your ride is solid. Merida is not a bad place to pass a few days andwhat was said about there being nowhere to buy the equipment between Campeche and Guat. is very true. Good luck!

So things have gotten exponentially worse, which means we aren't going to make it out of the Cancun area. I'm going to have my parts sent to this area.

Does anyone have suggestions for a motorcycle shop? Preferably somewhere that has a torque wrench, large sockets, and can change tubeless tires..

Eaglerider - Harley Davidson Reservations has a rental fleet in Cancun and will know how to get parts. I suggest talking to them in person rather than via email.

Thanks. They, and the Suzuki dealer in Cancun, are my best two leads right now. I should know in the next hour if I have parts coming, or if I need to find them locally. I'm trying to seize the moment and get new sprockets, chain, *and* tires if I am having them come from the states anyhow.

Always get tires before you need them.
My experience is that tires are much cheaper in GT than MX.

Tires are also cheap in Nicaragua but go way up in Costa Rica.

So I'm going to have tires, chain, and sprockets "muled" here from the US. It's a good excuse to see family for a couple of days, swim, etc.

It'll be nice to quit worrying about tires.. and I can't go much further than 50 miles with the current sprocket situation, so it's great timing.

There will be some duty or customs fees attached and you'll need to pay when they arrive. Make sure you can be reached very quick.

Let us know what the total costs are for what you had shipped, please.

So our costs won't be very helpful- we had someone courier down a new chain/sprocket set, new tires, and a couple of tools. There was no customs charge..

Earlier stuff I shipped to mexico came with about 10-20% due.
