Best blog site to use
 

can anyone suggest the best site to use to create my own blog. Not looking to create my own website, but just upload blogs, photos videos etc.

I am using wordpress.com its standard I guess. I quite like it...

And another one at blogspot.com same thing just more basic.

Yeah, I also use Wordpress, have been for 3 years now. There are a lot of widgets and bling you can add if you like, or keep it plain

I also paid for the pro version which allowed me to remove the word Wordpress from my site name, as shown below

I would like to add music occasionally, but at this stage it is not possible, but to write a blog and add photos, maps and videos it is great

Doesn't have all the features of full blown blog sites but is still very usable.

The only issue I had with the HU site is photo size, I wanted big photos :)

I also use word press. I have a nice template so it looks different to the rest though...

Try tumbler.com. Its free
I set one up for a mate last week... very easy. Pick a style sheet you like and its up and running in no time. If you want to modify the style, thats also easy if you know html/css

More to the point is that he knows nothing about 'puters but was able to put up posts in minuets.
He also linked it to his facebook.

Wordpress.com is free but has a bit of a learning curve.

The great thing is that you can create a new post via email, so when you're on the road and internet is slow, just send a post to your wordpress email address and hey presto, a new post.

Oh and yeah, how good is the big-picture-format!!! :D

If you want big photos, just put them on flickr and link to them.

However, keep in mind that most users have 1024 wide or at most 1280, so really big pictures break the page and require sideways scrolling - and take a HUGE amount of time to download, therefore making it tough for anyone with limited bandwidth - like those on the road - to view your pictures.

THAT's why we strongly recommend smaller photos on HU blogs. Hope that makes sense!

Grant, of course you will recommend the HU blog, but in reality it isn't flexible, slow to connecct and doesn't have the advantages of other blog sites. No offence, it's just my experience. What HU does provide is some valuable exposure to other like-minded individuals.

As for photos, Flickr is one exampe, photobucket and picasa are others. If you want to link to photos (which incidentally is IMO the best way to go) then as Grant says, make sure the photos are not too big otherwise readers will have problems viewing the photos not to mention uploading them, especially when the internet connection speeds are limited (or worse latency is very high).

In picasa, you have the option to limit upload size, this is handy but be aware of the reduction in quality as a result.

I think you need to ask yourself what do you want from a blog?

I did a 10 week trip from London to Turkey last summer and used the HU blog (Horizons Unlimited Motorcycle Travellers' Stories - Brett from Oz). It was perfect and I did not experience any problems with slow speeds, photo sizes etc. At the time I didn't have a flickr account but this is a good suggestion from Grant. I am now a wordpress user for another motorcycle tech blog site (ridewithtech.com) but would probably still use the HU option if I wanted to blog while on the road again.
