India mobile phone (apple or android)
Anyone spent time in India,
I'm planning a visit to India for about 12 months. I was planning to take my iPhone and buy a local sim but have since been advised that I would be better off buying an android phone when I get there. Any advice gratefully received Thanks Paul |
Was in India in 2015 for a month. As I recall it made no difference but your phone had to be unlocked from original service provider to use a local sim chip. In my case I had to unlock my Blackberry before I left Canada. Worked great.

We unlock our phones and buy a local SIM card everywhere we go, never an issue.
If you MUST be able to receive calls on your home number, then yes buy a local phone to make local calls, just be prepared for astronomical roaming rates. We have a spare unlocked phone set up ready to go that we carry too when needed. |

ATT has a "Day Pass" program where you pay $10/day when roaming out of country (at least for US based customers!) and that includes unlimited phone calls and huge amounts of data (same as your regular plan). India is one of the covered countries. That may seem high but it is a LOT cheaper than traditional out-of-country roaming. The $10 is a one time per day charge added to your regular phone bill, no extra charges whatsoever for roaming beyond that. |
