Internetaccess in USA
I'm travelling in USA for 7 months and sometimes stops at Internetcafees to catch up with my mail and make some reservations.
I usually stay at motels and want to ask if anyone knows if there is a ISP that offers flate rate tollfree dialup internetaccess. I want to attach my laptop to the nearest tehlephone plug dial some special number provide my username and password and that's all. |
There aren't any that provide a flat rate toll free access, that I know of.
I travel the US all the time. I've found Earthlink/Mindspring to have pretty good coverage in other than tiny towns.....but sometimes finding the local access number is a pain. (You have to call a toll free number) Another option is to get a $10 a month Netzero account, which will cover a lot of the larger cities, and use a prepaid phone card for your access when there isn't a local number. You can pick these generic LD cards up at most major discount stores......ranging from 5 cents a minute, up. (Wal mart, Kmart...anywhere) There aren't a lot of internet cafes in the US. I think Mindspring and AOL offer toll free access.......but that will cost you the $20 plus monthly rate, and a per minute add on fee. |
We use Earthlink for ISP, and seem to have more options than most people we meet traveling. As PeteSP mentioned, Earthlink has a local number from most towns, and a 1-800 option (which you have to request, adds to your monthly bill, but useful). Also note: in some motels, you need to tell the switchboard you're making calls from a computer. Some of them have to throw a switch, or something. Doesn't add to cost, but otherwise your call won't go through.
