Jcbmobile = Kpn-porto-300 = Sonim Xp1
JCBMOBILE = KPN-PORTO-300 = SONIM XP1
This promising, ruggdized mobile with no extra's (except Push2Talk, if that service it isn't too expensive) is made/developed/manufactured by SONIM (Sonim Technologies: VoIP, IMS based global software product company) In the Netherlands it's possible to get them with the dutch provider KPN in a package/business deal with subscribsion. Goodwoodweirdo: nice, where did you find it ? you have this yellow monster or one of the other more modest colours ? I was tempted by the P2T option, but as it turn's out although it can be used like a twowayradio/cb-radio/walkie-talkie it uses a different technology (tri-band GSM GPRS) so it depends on the gsm-network and providers and you can only speak to phones with the same technology/features like some Nokia's and other brands (but as it seems worldwide instead of 4km limitation). http://www.sonimtech.com/images/Soni...XP1---T-35.jpg cheers |
The Yellow Beast
Bart, I brought it from a reseller in the UK JCB Mobile - Call 0800 849 9990, it cost €300 including postage to Belgium. As its from JCB they only offer it in YELLOW ... ouch shouldn't loose it ..
We'll have to see how it holds up to a 6 week bike trip to Jordan... Now a handle bar mounting kit would be handy... I should add, I wanted a simple phone, good battery and without camera, games, touch screen etc etc .. |
Maybe you can workout something with this beltclip
Have I nice trip, I love Jordan, it was too long ago (well can't complain really, we're off to Mauri tomorrow). |
you can get it in black too....

JCB / Sonim XP1
I have the telephone and must say, first impressions are very good...decedent functions, very clear screen and very loud with its double speaker. Nice global time screen saver, gprs, blue tooth and tri-band....
Down side, no software cd or drivers... no mini usb cable... comes with a bloody great big belt clip...now just looking to buy the booster antenna, not that I need it in Belgium – but hey looks cool !! Seems its been to Dakar !! BV Capital - Rally Annie Seel Sonim XP1 GSM Dakar race Salut Matt |
cheap and cheerful.
What about a Nokia 1100.
I have seen them for £8 in the UK! So, cheap, simple, have an LED light on them, available in most countries, not flashy so not too nickable, good battery life, triband and a mate forgot and went wading into the sea with one in his pocket and it was still working. Dave. |
I have a Nokia 5140i.
It's a bit out-dated now, but its still works after 2-3 years! Its rubberised, sturdy, has a camera, PTT, loudspeaker, sound recorder, as well as other functions that I never use but love!! For example: a thermometer tyhat reads 5 degrees high (not so bad once you know about it!), a sonometer, if you want to know what the dB output of a KTM990 on full race cans is... and finally a digital compass that shows as an analogue image on screen. This actually works very accurately but, being a man, I never need a map and I never get lost, so a compass is pointless given I have the sense of direction of an albatross...... honest.....;) However, the torch is the featureI use most after the strange "telephoning" function everyone keeps harping on about! Don't people realise that phones have nothing to do with talking to people anymore?? Either way it replaced the 5140, that replaced the 5100, so perhaps there is a new version worth looking at.... ADDENDUM. I just reaslied that the 5500 is the replacement model and has not had good reviews. That said, I like the 5i40i, so if you see one, give it some thought! |
