Is this a serious competitor to Spot systems, Apple and Musk?
Bullitt, a rugged smart manufacturer, is announcing a smartphone that works on the normal phone signal systems but can, when required, connect to two satellite systems. More information here
|
Just saw that too.
Another feather in your do-it-all smartphone's cap. I am guessing it will hook up with Thuraya and Iridium. Saves carrying an InReach or similar, though Garmin's all-day sat tracking to online map is a handy feature. Doubtless there's an app for that too. IMO direct comms rather than triggering a beacon or pressing an 'SOS' button to some distant comms centre in Toulouse or Houston is a much better way of getting out of a fix. |
I suspect that there will be a significant "ouch" from the wallet when the prices come out unless the "ouch" comes from the monthly subscription. The key will be seeing if the number is a bigger one than from the Spot system. The one fly in the ointment is that I see too many of eggs in one basket.

Well here is another report on the Bullitt phone. This one states that the satellite SMS service will be by an additional monthly payment. Hopefully this is something that a user can dip into and dip out of depending on their needs.

Huawei's announced it as well: https://www.theverge.com/2022/9/6/23...t-china-beidou
But of course it uses Chinese satellites, and Apple will probably use GPS/Galileo. And Huawei is problematic in its own way. |
