Do any of you carry fishing stuff....I will be taking a 3-piece DAM rod that breaks down to a reasonable size...just wanted to know what gear any of you take .....must be lots of places everywhere where good fishing opportunities come up.....

Rucksack size fishing gear
my mate and I using this very short pack size "Shimano Exage Mini Telescopic Spinning Rod Medium TEXAXMTS210M" fishing rods and a 15x10x3cm box for the hooks, a lightweight mini reel and off you go........ :)
the hole thing comes in a handy soft case with a protection tube for the rod, fits in to a Rucksack easily which is strapped to the subframe parcel carrier. I know this rod is not cheap, but you can't find a smaller gear and on our now 2nd trip to Scandinavia it saves us a lot of money buying foot supplies and we can have fresh fish every night.......... :) Shimano exage ax stc mini telescopic spinning rod 2.1m - Only £46.99 - Tackleshop Shimano Exage Mini Telescopic Spinning Rod Medium TEXAXMTS210M Length 2.10m Weight 99g Transport length 350mm Sections 10 Guides 8 Carbon XT-40 Casting weight 10 to 30g |
I often take a small, telescopic rod and reel with me,something like the kiddie's starter kits you see for £15 or so.It collapses down small enough to fit inside my sleeping mat rolled up.Can't say i've caught many specimen fish with it but it's nice to chill out on a nice quiet riverbank where you're camping.

sometimes I take a pack rod with me like this one Cabela's -- Eagle Claw Trailmaster III Travel Rod
mines older but a little shorter. I use a little tin to carry some hooks and lead in. I have used a small tree branche and some monfilment to fish with. Both are nice for wasting time. |
Pocket Fishing Kit
You should check out Dave Canterburys Pocket fishing kit on his Wilderness Outfitters page on YouTube, AKA The Pathfinder School. Its not your usual rod and reel set-up... but looks like a lot of fun and a good wilderness/survival type tool.

Hell yeah ! - the rod gets priority packing over all else !! :D
Got myself a 7pc Orvis Fly Rod.......great for freshwater, even better for the surf ! Each piece just over 30cm long, in a solid tube case. Had it strapped to the side of my rucksack while backpacking a bit of west africa, still to determine how best to attach to the bike. Only thing is, once you bring the rod out and start throwing it about......people look at you as if you came from the moon.:cool4: |
Hi yes i carry a wilderness 7 piece fly rod and cheap plastic reel takes up hardly any space and just nice to have with you for when the oppertunity rises to have a cast Rob

Great thread.
I carry a telescopic rod for sea fishing (spinning) when camping, but I've never fished inland waters. Does spinning work on rivers and lakes? Maybe with smaller lures? Sorry for my ignorance, but fishing websites confuse the hell out of me! Any good links or book recommendations gratefully received. Nothing beats cooking your catch on a fire.. Thank you |
spinning on rivers and lochs is a very effective way to catch fish, ask in fishing shop for the right lures to use.
|
I use a telescopic spinning rig and always stop at local shops to get recommendations/info on locations and lures. Just don't count on catching anything.
Too many nights of eating Power Bars and the like after being blanked on the fish front... |

Options are endless, but besides rubber worms, rapala's etc, requiring a bigger tackle box......the Mepps Black Fury is the bread and butter, works everywhere !....except in heavy weed.
you get them with black blades and silver blades (with black sticker and spots overlaid) - I've had most my success on the silver blade and the yellow spots (as below) - simple but effective for dams, lakes, rivers, streams....across various depths. Mepps Black Fury Kaşık (GÜMÜŞ/SARI) ― www.enkolay.com.tr) for salt water.....definitely want to use florescent colours, green, blues and pinks best for me. |
