Best type of tank bag?
It's been years since I last was in the market - and much have changed. Two new bikes - and I need some advice.
Layered style I've looked at the Mosko Moto Nomax (on web only, not in real life). 6 layered compartmentalization, charging ports, room for hydration bladder, back pack configuration - it seems awesome! I really like the idea of having a back-pack that I can use for shopping or trekking. I also want the option to carry an easily accessible fleece jacket, some gloves maybe, and a camera. Will a layered style backpack work for this? Rigid bucket with hood This type seems very convenient while on the go - no hurry to zip up. Simply open the lid and grab whatever, or toss in whatever - and go - and zip shut when convenient. You sacrifice compartmentalization. As a backpack it might not be as good. Soft bucket This is what I have had in the past. One big room with a map pocket in the lid. One small pocket on each side and one facing me - very convenient. Expandable - convenient. What I did not like was that the bag became floppy unless completely filled. It was not even remoteley waterproof, and dealing with a separate rain cover is something I prefer to avoid for as long as possible. I've never had a back pack configruable bag in this category, but missed it. Floating, Strapped Mount vs Magnetic Magnetics is a no go for me on any bike - due to chafing and how poorly I assume it will sit on more agressive riding - also my GF's tank on her 390 Adventure is plastic. On the T7 I don't know as I am still waiting delivery. The floating kind - ihow well does it work offraod? I like how easily it comes on and off, and that it doesn't chafe. On the Tenere 700, that has no tank ring, it requires a rig that not only looks very funky, but one which I do not trust. I may go down this route for my GF's 390 who probably would prefer a rigid bucket. The strapped kind - it will cause chafing for sure, but not as bad as the magnetic I presume. Dealing with the straps is convenient enough for me. This is likely the route I will go on the T7. I am leaning towards the Nomax - if the many compartments have enough give to accomodate larger items in one. Other desireable features
Advice please Bucket with hood or layered with many compartments and organization features, or something else? Volume? What is a good allround volume - for both trips and every day use closer to home? |
I'm also in the market for a tank bag. Never used one before. I looked at the Nomax, but it seems like it's not waterproof.
Would (also) love to hear recommendations. Are there any good waterproof tank bags? |
I have been very happy with my Enduristan 4H.

I like Baglux, they do bike specific harness for a range of models which protects the tank really well and a good range of bags to go on them, they also do some universal harness which I have also used and work well.

Apart from the different designs - the size is important.
I bought a F650GS twin a while ago that included the BMW tank bag for this bike. For road trips it was quite useful, good volume and (probably) waterproof. For off-road rides it was a pita. Far too wide to ride the bike while standing on the foot pegs :( |
My advice will be less useful to the OP since I'm not focusing on offroad performance, but...
My go-to system has been the Givi Tanklock. Have a small 3D6-series bag, 3D603 I guess, which holds my chargers, papers like ferry tickets and things, a bottle of water - basically quick-access stuff. Very easy to take off for access to the tank at a gas station, has a shoulder strap for convenient carrying off the bike. Essentially anything I care about losing is in that bag, which I always take with me - the stuff in the panniers is all replaceable. The one I have is not 100% weatherproof, but it took riding through a MAJOR downpour - for a long time - for the zipper seam to fail. |

Givi the best of the lot. Magnets and straps are almost totally obsolete these days.

I'm a big fan of the Giant Loop Fandango tank bag.
I don't actually have that tank bag, because my current tank bag works good enough, but if I were going to get one, I would go with the Giant Loop Fandango model. It has organizers inside. You can zip it on and off of its harness which seems like a great feature for camping when you want to take inside your tent with you. It would also work well for hotels. |

My 2013 Enduristan 2S is still in use and I bought a two-generations-on 4S for the UK.

I'm a total convert to the tank bags that clip onto a tank ring. No more messing around with straps.
A good magnetic one (without straps) comes a close second as long as you have a big metal tank. My tankbag (can't remember brand), also has an SAE Connector extension built into it. Making charging your phone/camera/powerbank on the go really easy. |
I know that posting this is tempting fate. I have an Enduristan bag. I had a Givi tank ring bag as well. The zip on the Givi failed, so I cannibalised it for it’s tank ring attachment and used this attachment on the Enduristan bag. This involved perforating the underside of the bag. So far, even in very heavy rain, it hasn’t leaked, and it has been secure on the tank ring.

Waterproof
If 100% waterproof is top priority.

O have never got external cover to work. => With the later type of bag => All things in that bag has to be in small plastic bags. It is a trade off. |
