fully equipped asus eee 900a
hi all,
i have bought an asus eee 900a pc with 4gb build in solid drive. it came with xandros but it was crap. so i have installed eee ubuntu. it was a great OS. however it wasn't good for mapsource and take almost 3gb on the solid drive. i slimmed down my windows xp using nlite and. after slimming down it was 159mb including sp3 and 600mb installed on the pc. after i installed the essential drivers and mapsource, pdf reader, pdf converter, webcam driver, opera browser, skype, media player classic, antivirus, etc, it was only 800mb. i have installed portable applications like office applications, firefox, amsn, googleearth, etc to 8gb ssd card. everything works perfecly. highly recommended. |
I am literally in the middle of doing the same thing with my 901! so far so good just putting the drivers on now... for anyone that wants a dummies guide go here...Slimming Down Windows XP Professional Using nLite [EeeUser Eee PC Wiki]
( I would slip stream sp3 it is much faster...)... good luck I think i may have things a bit wrong but my ISO file is only 550kb? have not had a chance to see what that means in terms of disk size yet |
hi xander
550kb iso file is impossible. i think you did something wrong. you can also find these links usefull: i64X.com - nLite Windows XP Install on Asus Eee PC Download PortableApps.com Suite and Platform | PortableApps.com - Portable software for USB drives YouTube - Installing Windows XP on a Netbook Via USB (Acer Aspire One) iso file should be between 150-200 mB. and you need external cd-drive. there are also ways of installing using usb stick (bootable usb) however, i didn't achiev it. good luck |
Im thinking of buying one of these to take with me on my travels, but most folk seem to recommend the linux system rather than xp....and comments from you folks?

I'm not sure why people don't get on with linux (although Solaris is better :-) ), all I did with my eeePC is switch to advanced mode, upgrade to FF3 and add a newsreader. Much easier than installing windows and arsing around. As I don't do GPS I don't need mapsource. Useful liniux info for the eeePC LITTLE BUDDIES - Linux Magazine Online |
if i wasn't using mapsource, i would stick with eee-ubuntu. xandros is ok. however, i did not like the idea of xandros. it is too basic and not much info on the internet. i have installed xp just because it take less space (only 600MB after installation) and can run mapsource.
conclusion: any asus eee pc xxx is fine if you only use it for mailing, word to write, e-mail, msn and skype. whatever os it has.... |

If you want XP and have access to the soft where buy the linux version and swap it over you get a bigger HD for the same money! BTW OZHANU: I miss typed and it was a 500mb ISO.. my nlite did not work so i will be re-re-installing it soon... Would you be willing to send me your nlite "Last Sessionion.INI" so that I can make sure it was something i did to make the ISO not burn properally and not the version on nlite? If so I will PM you my email addy Cheers mate Xander |
hi xander,
sure i can send my last_session.ini pm me your e-mail please. 500mb iso is too too big. not nlited xp is around 650mb. so, you have to chop it more. nlited xp should be around 150-200mb. also bear in mind that "If you have an Intel Atom processor, you will need Multi-processor support for SMT support. It can be removed in Celeron models" i have nlited the xp 3 times just for that. i couldn't make bootable usb (actually, i did but, could not installed xp), so i have hired an extarnel dvd-rom and installed using this dvd-rom. |
