NEW! - Hepco Becker plastic panniers
 

Anyone had a chance to have a good look at these, my German is not very good, but it seems they'll be available early next year? H&B claim they're better than Aluminium boxes, details at: http://www.hepco-becker.de/gobi.html - I have to say that I really like the idea of heavy duty plastic panniers - what do you think?

If they are repairable with some sort of common chemical they would be pretty good. Hopefully they are made with a plastic that deforms rather than cracks.

If they are half as good as the H&B "JOURNEY" bags I been using for the last 3 years the GOBI will be a great bag.

I think that these Plastic panniers are the same ones that KTM are advertising in their LC8 950 Adventure brochure. They have a 3 litre liquid tank in each pannier. Enquire at your local KTM dealer.

Yip, I used the GOBI system on my three month travel through russia. They are perfect! Waterproof even after several crash, easy to fix on the bike and the plastic can take a lot of energy....

I checked out the Gobi's, and they really look good. I'll use them next year and I'll hopefully confirm that they are good.

Does it really cost 610 Euro for each box? Thats almost 1200 AUD or 3600AUD plus frame ...Thats half a new KLR 650!

Are Hepco Beckers same for Buell as KTM
 

I might buy a KTM 950 with bags My Buell Ullyses came without bags. Are they the same bags?? If you own some how are they holding up? Anyone crashed with them? How did you repair them?

My KTM 950 Adventure has them and the matching top box. The side bags are twin walled and you can store water (wine?) in each one between the walls and taps allow you to drain off. My bike fell off it's stand fully laden, and I mean HEAVY laden. Scuffed and dented the pannier and it looked bad to be honest.

Attached an air line to the water filler and applied a bit of pressure and the dent popped out! Helped to apply a bit of heat, just a bit mind!

Scuffs were sanded out easily and finished to a near perfect finish with wire wool. I can't see the repair so It's passed the test for me.

Only concern I have with them is they are a bit wide, check them at the local KTM dealer, not ideal for filtering in traffic but manageable. I tend to use the top box as a daily carrier and save the bags for trips.

These bags have been out for years now I use them for travelling all the time, they are very waterproof, reasonable security, reasonable crashproof -deformable and double skinned bit like a ice box, have a 3 litre water jacket between the skins but are of limited capacity inside about 30 litres. but all round they are a good bag and are often available second hand as they were free with ktm 950s for a while. The top box is 42 litre a bit heavy but solid and secure.

Just to inform, in the Netherlands I can get them (at mdi-online.nl) for € 669
This is for a set of 37l. Gobi's (left and right) with rack. And without rack € 539 for 2 42l. cases.
I got this info from their site, so I don't know if all info is correct.
But at least it gives you an idea of the price.
If you have a good (nice) local dealer you should be able to get them with a discount of 15%-20%..
Furthermore I often come across products that are cheaper in Germany than in the Netherlands. So (online?) orders from Germany might be an option as well (although with these cases the shipping cost might be quite high..)

Pelican cases as opposed to the HB cases

I'm new to the forum. Just bought a 2006 F650 GS and am looking at luggage for a Central/South America trip in a few months. The aluminum panniers are out of my budget and look $$$ when new. The HB Gobi's are beautiful, but also quite expensive. Has anyone considered the large Pelican cases mounted to a frame made by Moto-Sport Panniers in Colorado?

The only drawback I can see is that the Pelican's weigh 12.5 lbs each. They're waterproof/dustproof and nearly bombproof. They aren't so flashy looking as to scream "steal me!" MS makes the necessary hardware to mount these (around $269) and at under $100 for each case, they look like a very sensible option.

I have no experience with this type of equipment and would appreciate any thoughts from forum members.

hi all was just reading through the post for panniers, and thought i would add my tuppence worth , when i was equiping my old yamaha 600 for a africa trip i looked at all the pannier systems they all looked pretty good especially the hepco becker ones but unfortunately the price was pretty good too ,as i was stuggling with finaces any way, i looked for alternatives , what i used in the end was ex-army ammo crates they do one the same size as the hepco one,s approx 25 ltrs they are steel (easy to weld too) waterproof ( for that enevatable drop in the river) lockable with a bit of welding of hasps and lastly and best of all cheap as f--k ! i made my whole system up for 40quid thats 2 box,es 15 sheets each NICE, £10 steel tube for the rack, now it,s fair to say that i am quite handy with a mig so that saved some money for me as i did not have to pay someone to mig a rack up for me , the only down side was they are a bit heavier that the ally one,s i only really noticed this on really bad corrugations and really bad roads, they survived 27 crashes in africa 2 of those were real good ones plus they saved my leg when a car ran into me at a juntion , if any one wants to have look i will try and get some on here or email me laters freddy

Hey Guys,

Talk with Mick or TK at Safaritanks.com (Australia) about some boxes that they were planning to make. I think they will be stronger and cheaper then the Hepco & Becker system. These guys made the fuel pods for the R1200GS for Touratech and are avid bike riders so have the know how and what is required.

The MSRP on the Buell Ulysses side cases and mounting rack is $799 USD, and I just ordered some from St. Paul Harley Davidson in minnesota for $620 USD including shipping to San Diego. I assume they will price it that way for anyone as I didn't have any connection there. When (if) they show up I will post again if they are not the same as being discussed.

Post script: FYI I just found out that the Buell cases are the "journey" model referenced above, not the "Gobi"

The KTM panniers are very strong, I had the missfortune to hit my TT Zega panniers into a KTM with the plastic, one of mine was almost totaled, while the plastic just got a small dent.

Hi There,

I had a set of H&B Gobi's on my R1200GS and reckon they were the strongest part of the bike!

Most recommended, very tough and were perfect for my needs.

As they're double skinned I also found them to be free of condensation problems, which was great as I used them to carry camera kit.

The only reason that I sold them was that I've down sized to an XT250 Serow and were way too big for that bike. Still managed to get £297.00 for them on Ebay and that was without the frame (which I sold with the bike).

They look good. There are alternatives to dedicated motorcycle equipment as far as baggage goes, and a hell of a lot cheaper too.
