tank bag options
I've got an Africa Twin, looking for a good tank bag. Does anyone know of an alternative to Touratech's VP45 tank bag with the extra side bags? They are good but expensive.
I know Hein Gericke used to do a similar one in their Tuareg range, but don't seem to have it now. What about any home made options for some front side bags? thoughts appreciated Richard |
There are lots of inexpensive tank side bags (soft) available. They make them for ATVs. I generally prefer a small tank bag, since if I have space, I will fill it. A big bag (filled) has poor balance and often gets in the way.
Here are some pics of "home made" front side bags. http://forum.svrider.com/photoalbum/...rch=front+bags They are pelican cases (waterproof). I spent a total of about US$110 to buy them and fit them. I really like how they turned out, so I am quite happy with them. Matthew |

This company seems to do decent tankbags for most bikes and am thinking of getting one for my GS. Might be of some interest. Cheers |
The model of that case is 1420 (they are made for canoes and other small boats). I could not find them on the Pelican site, which is depressing, but some places (like B&H Photo) still list them as being in stock.
The mounting is home brew, using the existing mounts for the boxes. The 1420 cases come with adjustable hooks for grabbing the side of a canoe (so if you flip the boat, the box is still attached) I originally bought parts to mock up a mounting system, but the result was rigid enough I never replaced it. I mounted to four places. Using the original geometry on the sides of the boxes, I have two pieces of shelf mounting forming a box cross section beam (with a popsicle stick as extra filler). This beam goes through the frame and connects both boxes together (padded with a cut up mouse pad). Similar beam portions attach the front of the boxes mount to the radiator mounting lugs. I have screws going from the inside of the boxes into the frame sliders (which can no longer reach the ground) and into the strut connecting the bottoms of the boxes. I am sure you would need to do something different, but the shelf strut is inexpensive and works pretty well. (Shelf strut for adjustable wall shelves -- you mount the 1/2" wide struts to the wall, and they have a multitude of slots for mounting arms that in turn hold the shelves -- most hardware stores have the stuff). Pelican has larger top opening cases (you would have to make all your own mountings) that you might like better. It is pretty easy to drill a few holes in the plastic and mount whatever brackets you want. The overall weight of the box is almost identical to a 16ga (1.5mm) aluminum box with the same interior dimensions. I guess you could also use side opening boxes, since you can get them with a rail to mount a bungee net to, but you can be a little more careless with a top opening box. Matthew |
Desert Options
I picked up a Camel bag (i.e. for putting on a Camel) in Uzbekistan for 20 bucks. Not the best tank bag ever, but stuff stays in it at speed (although it does cause a lot of drag) and the locals in the sticks loved it, and it solved my spare petrol problem - a few 2 l drinks bottles full of the stuff in each side
