trip meter help please.

hi there, I have an XT600 that has a broken trip meter and the clocks are in miles not Kms anyway ( I'd rather have Kms for reading route guides for trip to Morocco) I know you can get mechanical Kms to miles converters but the trip meter is bust. Does anyone know of a way around this apart fron changing the clocks? maybe there is an add on accessory that clamps to the bars which will give a Km read out? I dont fancy writing dowm mileages, subtracting from original number and then converting into Kms!!! what a pain! any help would be great, cheers.

Seem to be two option here -

The expensive one: - get a road computer/trip computer style thing from Touratech and similar companies, there are a few threads about these on certain places on here

OR:

The cheap alternative - buy a cycle computer!

I have looked into this as an addition to my XTZ so that I can judge Kms when abroad. a bit of research has found the following -

1. Nobody makes a standard kit that is long enough to do the job on an my XTZ.
2. Sigma make some really good ones AND
3. Sigma make a rear mounting sensor for bikes that comes with a much longer wire on it.
4. The sensor (reader) can easily be mounted on the bike fork and with a ittle working will get close to the rim.
5. You can get rim mounted magnets that make this easier.

All up - I think you can do it for about £30 with a bit of inginuity..

If you do find a solution please let us know - any pics would be greatly appreciated aswell. Good luck

Tony.

FYI Hein Gericke include the longer sensor wire with their Sigma speedo kits as standard - fitting requires a little planning, cable ties and epoxy putty (this stuff sets FAST)... there are lots of howto's out there for assistance... HTH & ride safe

My 2p worth: you're much better to mount the magnet near the hub of the wheel. This ensures that it gets greater contact time with the Hall Effect sensor on the fork leg. You will therefore get a more reliable readout.

I may have to do this when my IMO is being repaired - depends how long they take to replace it!
