xt660z crashbars
Am looking for sugestions concerning crashbars to my Tenere.
I have had a look at the one from Metal Mule, but as I understand there is more to choose from. Whats your preferred crashbar? Haakon |
I've got the Yamaha ones, which seem fine, but you can't buy them any more, so not terribly helpful to you.
Are you a member on XT660.com? I think you might get a better answer on there, because there will be people who own all the different types. Oh and please don't buy the stupid ones which come all the way up the sides of the tank in order to protect the tank-protector panels :D. Slightly pointless and extremely heavy. |
Check out adventure-spec for engine bar / bash plate combination. Very sturdy and well priced.
You need to get on to XT660.com to see some pictures and get further advice. Hope this helps.bier |
Hi i used the motech Crashbars on my tenere and there top quality fit and finish.have a touratech sumguard fitted that had to be slightly modified to fit them.they got a tryout on the trails of donegal and perfect for the job.

Hi, I like the Yamaha crash bars. They don,t make them anymore as mentioned but Rideon motorcycles glasgow still have some in stock. Andy

Pretty sure there was an issue with the yamaha one cracking.

Great Dash!
I understand your weight/estetic point of view. But on the road far away, I kind of believe its better with the high reaching protection. This is the one I am thinking of.. http://www.off-the-road.de/out/pictu...z_tenere_2.jpg |
the adventure spec (G-IT) crashbars and bashplate have a very similar look to the OE Yamaha ones. But conttrary to Yam's, they don't break as easily and are still sold.
The plastics on the side of the bike actually offer a quite adequate protection and are relatively cheap to replace. Personally I would find higher crash bars overkill for this bike, and I have been taking it into some pretty gnarly off-road conditions. |
I've done *a lot* of crash-testing of my bike, especially this year (I've been racing my Tenere in the UK rally series).
The first thing that touches down is always the handlebars - mine aren't very straight any more, and I've bent a couple of pairs of handguards as well (although they've done their job and saved the levers). In most circumstances the bars keep the rest of the bike off the floor. The next thing that touches down would be the grey panels on the side of the tank - ie the ones which the one you've posted don't actually cover. I have seen some which come all the way up and over those, but it's a bit silly - those panels are, as duibceK points out, there as crash protection for the tank. They do it quite well, it takes a lot to damage them to the point they need replacing, and they are quite cheap to replace (~£30 each in the UK). It would be a very odd crash that caused damage in the area that those engine bars protect - and again, what they are actually protecting is 'sacrificial' plastic panels. Those ones in the picture might be quite handy for mounting some extra bags on, or (as shown) mounting auxiliary lights, but I'm not sure they add much in terms of protection. If I needed to buy some more, I'd be looking at the G-IT or other options which are similar to the Yamaha ones. |
Well argued duibhceK and Dash,
I have had a good look at the one from ad spec, and I am convinced. Dash, is the the Big Bike Rally Challange you are talking about? If so, maybe we can excange som info in "private messages". I will participate in this The Centennial-rally in august. Haakon |
I've replied to your PM, but for others, yes, I was talking about the BBRC.
The Centennial Rally looks like it's going to be an incredible event. I'm missing most of the season next year because I'm going to ride the Trans-Am Trail and generally have a trundle round the US, but I'm definitely going to be back for the Centennial. |
