Cigarette lighter socket - no battery
 

Hi folks, have an electric question for you: I would like to add a cigarette lighter socket on my bike so to charge the cell phone and GPS while on the road. My bike is a Yamaha TT600 with just kickstart and no battery. Though it does have a generator that produces 12V while the bike is running. My question is this: Can I use a cigarette ligher socket on the TT, and if yes do you have any advice how to connect it?

I too have a kickstart TT600 (2001 TT600R), in the owners handbook is a small wiring diagram you could look at. Make sure that the power drain does not exceed the output of the alternator ( you may have to ride with lights off- obviously not a good idea at night!) Hein Gericke sell the small cigarette lighter type plug and sockets you could use.

Check Touratech shop. They have sockets and plug different styles.

Leigh - the handbook is Swedish (the TT600R is so rare in Norway they didn't bother make the translation). Unfortunately there is no wiring diagram in it, so I understand that the UK issue is the one to have. The bike is also a 2001, you know, Belgradas finest year.

Stuart - good point. The TT600R generator produces AC while, as I understand, the output from the socket must be DC. A rectifier should therefore be necessary. Though you talk about a battery system too. Isn't a rectifier enough?

I used a plug similar to the BMW accessory pin. I had one plug with two leads and one connected to the AA battery charger. It was wired directly to the battery with a fuse on the + wire. It could be used to Jump Start the bike etc if neccesary and I would run a fluro light off it at night.

Erik, I will try and scan in the diagram for you. Although the alternator puts out a.c. the bike already has a rectifier I'm sure. Forget the battery, although if you are determined to have one the new TT600RE model has e-start and battery so components should be compatible and the microfiche is probably available from xpower.de

sure U can. I've TT600R (2001) and I have already mounted that socket. In my model there are four cables march out from the voltage regulator. Three of them are white (comes from alternate) and one is red. The red one is the output of regulated 12V. You can merge your + cable of cigarette lighter socket right there. It's good to mount some kind of filter (as used with car radio receivers) first.
It works perfect in my bike.

bUgI - Thanks for your advice. Now, if possible I could see what you've done with my own eyes? You see I'm currently driving through the Baltics (now writing from Pärnu in Estonia) heading for the Curonian Split and then Budapest where I'll make my mind where to go next. Hi Leigh,
Do you still have a wiring diag for the TT600R? - with the kick/s and no battery.
I have a manual for the TT600RE, 2004 so it is not too good on this subject matter!!

Unfortunately I cannot go to Ripley - just can't be in two places at the same time type of issue.

If you do have it electronically, that would be great - or a photocopy or whatever.
You may have seen on my gasket issue thread (that seems to have been running for ever) that, now the bike is back in one piece, I have lost the spark!! Not the first time of course - you helped out the last time around and that appeared to be a simple case of cleaning the earthing of the coil.

Anyway any version of the kickstart wiring diag would be very helpful,
