Dry bags/Givi racks
 

Brand new to horizon unlimited! Has anyone used dry bags (ortlieb-aerostich) mounted on givi side racks for a 05 1200gs. Searching for softbag set ups,also read something about mesh style locking system for bags? Any advice on above or soft luggage for my bike appreciated as it's 2 F in michigan :funmeterno:

Yep the Ortlieb bags are great, got a couple myself, but I just use mine strapped behind me, not on a rack.

They are 100% waterproof though!

For a R1200GS Id go with Jessie Bags, there hard AL box built for the GS.

I use saddlebags there not "dry bags" but stay dry more or less. I also use dry bag stuff sacks for the things I need to stay dry. I have a GIVI top box and dry bag by Seattle sports on the seat. For around town and vary short trips the GIVI is grate any thing longer then a few days I find it less and less adaptable. I also have a set of Zerga box I have not put on my bike. There are TONS of soft bags out there nelson-rigg CL-850 is a remake of an old standby Nelson Rigg

More info perfect DLbiten. Failed to mention it's a $$$$$ issue. I'm also looking for a gps,barbacks and passenger backrest.I was informed about quick release system extra for ortlieb bags. I think I need racks to keep bags off high exhaust on GS. I'm hoping this will allow me to use my 51l bmw tailbag.

I have a battered old XT600 with 2 old AMMO boxes as topboxes (removeable) i use 2 x 18 litre Daysacks as panniers and 2 ortlieb medium drysack behind me as storage n Backrest.

BMW Top Box (love it), Touratech 41lt Panniers (Hate em) and Dry bags (Love em) on top of the panniers.

Wished I'd got the Jesses instead, but dry bags are a must have piece of kit no matter what setup you choose, not only will they keep your kit dry, it enables you to keep your used stinky Knickers away from the clean ones.

I have 5lt for electronics, chargers and cables

35lt for my tent

25lt for my Advanced Designs Convertible Gore-Tex sleeping bag (you unzip it into two sections for summer use or zip it together for winter use, plus being Gore-Tex it keeps the weather out)

10lt for dirty stinky or wet kit

And two 15lt for clean clothes

Now I don’t care if I drop the bike whilst river crossings or when it p*sses down, as I know when I get to my destination that my kit is clean and dry and ready to use.

ortleib do a set of panniers although they arent very big, probably meant for bicyclists, not human beings.

i use a large sized dry bag strapped across the rear rack or longways along the rack and pillion seat. about 96ltrs i think it is, plenty big and 100% dry

Seems there are a few ortlieb bags that are made the Aerostich ones look to be custom made for them and are sole distributors.

Thanks for the replies. I'm as confused as ever. the more info I get, the more I start flip flopping between hard luggage and soft luggage. Everything sounds so wonderful with caribou pelicans until I see them in person.:helpsmilie:I need to place my wallet next to my screen.
