Fuel Bottles....whats available?
 

I have used a Sigg fuel bottle for carrying meths for cooking but are similar bottles recommended for carrying extra fuel?

I was after something which carries somewhere between the 1L sigg bottle and a 5L plastic gerry can.

Just for emergencies really. the tank on my bike is only good for between 120-140 miles depending on the terrain, and no one has 'invented' bigger tanks for it yet!

by the way this is only for light european touring, not a round the world adventure! i only have soft luggage to so nothing that need bolting to the filing cabinet style panniers!!!

Primus sell 1.5L aluminium fuel bottles, similar to the sigg bottle. I found some for sale on ebay, £12 if I remember right. Another option would be a 2L plastic jerry can. Touratech sell one, for about £15 I think. Fortunately Hein Gericke also stock the same can and only charge about £8.

I've had a look at Gericke's website and can't see them. What are they listed as ?. I've tried searching petrol can, fuel bottle, etc. but nothing comes up.

What happens if you use a simple plastic water bottle ?
I know folk that have used them for a days trail riding but don't know about long term.
I'm sure they're not recommended but unsure as to why.
Does the petrol rot the plastic ?
Is the seal problematic ?
Just wondered really, thank you.

Hi Hustler, the usual 2l water bottles are far too weak, and leaked petrol stinks on gear. The bottom of the bottle is very prone to leak. They're made to use once and throw away. No idea about chemical reaction though. Maybe even, any reaction could sludge up the engine! Just a thought. Linzi.

OK Linzi, good point, that's a no then.
What about the containers you buy oil in, they seem quite sturdy ?
They certainly come in 1 litre and 4 litre sizes and probably others too.
So after using the oil for an oil change a useful petrol container ?
Wash them out first of course.
But there again, for the amount of money we're saving here, probably better off going to Touratech or Hein Gericke.

During the 2WW my dad was in North Africa with Indian troops. The column was hit from the air and the Indians all sat around watching the burning trucks! Dad shouted and, grabbing a fire extinguisher marked as such, sprayed the oil it contained on the flames! They used the oil to stop the leaf springs stop squeaking!

I wouldn't bother washing them out. A little bit of engine oil in your petrol isn't going to hurt anything.

is it worth all this to have only an extra 2ltrs of fuel? where are you going in europe you cant get fuel every 120mi?

if youre desperate bungy a 5ltr greeny on the back seat inside a binliner, but dont put a couple of lovely shiny sigg bottles in a pretty rack on your panniers with "steal me" written all over them.

Try.... rural France, on a Sunday, without a French bank card.

Have you looked at the fuel packs made for quads/atvs? Kolpin do one which is 12" x 13" x 3.5" and holds 1.25 gallons.


They also do a water pack as well, for anyone who likes a drink en route. More HERE.

been there, done that, waited 1/2hr for the next person to come along and used her card to put 20euros in the bike, giving her the cash equivelent. french folk are quite used to it apparently.

but since then i have made sure my cards work over there, i have used nationwide visa debit and marbles mastercard this year in france and spain no problems.

you may want to consider a 'soft' option from a cpny called liquid containment in Oz.
They do 'pillow' shaped fuel and water containers of various sizes
An email (about a month old) from Paul said:
