I'm looking for a good compass
Hi all, I'm in need of a tough compass - preferably lighted (for night riding). It needs to be mounted near the speedo cluster on my BMW 650GS. I'd like to find one that would be a permanent mount and allows for compensation. Any suggestions or leads? Thanks, Victor

Compass
I have used a Brunton compass for years both on the bike and for mountaineering and backpacking, with no problems at all. The Silva and Suunto are also very high quality pieces. Having used all of the above at one time or another, it comes down to personal prefrence. Declination scale is a must, I like having a thermometer and sighting/signaling mirror also. An inclinometer isn't necessary unless you will be travelling in avalanche country. Check out www.campmor.com, www.sierratradingpost.com, www.killerdeals.com, www.mgear.com.

Daft question....
With all the metal on the handlebars and the odd electrical instrument...does a 'normal' walking compass still give you the right direction?? Question arises because I've got a house build of natural stone in the 1870's and the walls seem to be magnetic....in certain parts of the house I can make a Silva compass spin around!!! ??? Jens |
Apparently you need a special compass to offset the effects of metal and electrical circuits. I just ordered a motorcycle compass (plus temperature gauge and clock) made by 'Formotion', a company which apparently specialises in gear for such things as motorcycles.
The compass apparently can be adjusted for working near metal. Also the compass, clock and thermometer are well sealed, weather proof and water proof to a few atmospheres. I haven't received them yet but they get good reviews. A photo of the compass is in the link above. Sean |
In general a compass with compensation refers to a compass with adjustments for intallations with nearby metal.
But for a motorcycle that tours at night you also need: a) illumination, b) clear and bright numerals, c) vibration proofing (via damping fluids or a digital compass) and d) really tight mount. |

No problems with metal and electrics and you get GPS thrown in John |
