12v Fan
 

Can anyone recommend a 12v cab fan please, I have a cheapo Chinese clip on one at present and it's very noisy and consumes a lot of power. Despite a google search, it seem either around £10 cheapo's (all the same) or marine grade £100

Looking a variable speed quality fan around 6" Dia (150mm)

I've got a couple of durite metal fans in the back of the Landy. Metal, heavy but pretty strong.

I've been looking into this and found the following.

1) Hella do two types, the jet single speed and the turbo twin speed. These seems to be used on boats, but are the ideal size for the car. Bad news is the reviews are poor. The price in the UK are high at £89. Best to go on eBay and get one from the states, where they pay the import tax, working out at £65 delivered for the turbo.

2) the durite one mentioned is on eBay. I might go for this one.

3) another idea is to use a computer fan of the same size (about 6 inches) these can shift bigger volumes of air than normal fans and can cost as low as £5...:D also they can run on bearings, not brushes, which appear to last longer with a drop of oil now and then.

Hella Jet Turbo is the way to go. Not cheap but really powerful.

I tried to these normal computer fans - but they has not enough Power.

And alternative product is "Fan-Tastic" Endless Breeze. Both are pretty common for world travelers, if you study this traveller blogs carefully. For both you find good reviews (in these traveller blogs).

No, off to the Balkans in four weeks time with Christopher. We went last year and it was very hot at times sleeping in the truck, Bosnia and Montenegro were stunning and I want to spend a bit more time exploring. :thumbup1:

Going via Romania, Bulgaria and Kosovo then into Montenegro and heading back north if all goes to plan :)

I had considered a computer fan, I know they do loads of configurations and they are 12v DC and I do have some 120mm ones in a cupboard somewhere.

Might butcher the cheapo Chinese one and have a go at installing a PC fan in the chassis as I'm too tight to pay for a Hella one bier

This could all end in tears ;)

EDIT Plastic DURITE 6" £23 Inc. Del at Ebay maybe the way to go.

Nice one..:D.....there are computer fans, as I say, that move alot of air. These are usually mentioned in the sales write up. I found one which shifted twice the amount than the Hella fans...still wavering myself between computer and Durite. Let us know which you go for and what you think... Cheers.. Kev

Just bought a plastic DURITE 6" from Ebay £20 Inc, will report back when it arrives, they are CE marked, so it's got to be better than the Chinese one which nearly chopped my finger off ;)

Have you considered a 230Vac fan with an inverter?
Then you can get an oscillating fan with 4 speeds and bigger blades that are less noisy with the same air movement.
It'll be cheap and if it fails, you can easily find a new one anywhere in the world

Not a bad idea for sure :thumbup1: the power loss of the inverter could be made up with a far better quality fan. My small inverter claims 90% Efficiency.

For example this could be ideal for a portable fan for me. (sleeping in landcruiser leaves little space for stuff)

I use this one in my car, so far no problems. An earlier one I had, would cut out at around 50 degrees Centigrade but this one has built in ventilator, so can take more heat.
I installed a switch in the 12v wire, so you don't have to pull the plug out, when you don't use it, because it has a small idle consumption.

The plastic DURITE 6" Part No. 0-210-32 is far better than the cheapo Chinese one and I think its very good value for money...recommended :)

It draws a stated 1.4 amps @ 12v btw.
