200tdi, 300tdi, td5 and 2.4l Ford transit
Hi All,
I've found lots of information on comparisoms of the classic land rover engines 200tdi, 300tdi and the TD5. And have seen the pros and cons of each. Does anyone have information on the new ford 2007 2.4l engine and how it compares to the TD5 and 300tdi. Also does anyone know if it's has the same electronics as the TD5 or less. Thanks for all info |
Arguably it has more electronics, as it is a common rail diesel, whereas the TD5 is a unit injector type engine. I drove one almost a year ago and was highly impressed by the tractability of the engine. The anti-stall allowed it to climb a 45 slope with no feet on the pedals and backwards!!! But I feel that Landrover have effectively rolled over and shown Toyota/Nissan their soft belly in submission ;-) The 300Tdi production has stopped I believe, so there is no longer a Landrover for the developing world. I got quite excited about rumours of a new Defender 14 months ago or so, only to find it consisted of a transit engine and a new bonnet <BG>
I would have one if I lived in the UK, but for Africa.... No. For expedition use, I would be a bit worried. Our electricians here can diagnose a 1HZ engined cruiser with diagnostics consisting of an interior bulb on a bit of wire, but a durotorque (?) would have them well stumped. I am not a luddite as we also have electronic CAT equipment and Renault trucks, but only because we have good dealer backup/diagnostics and parts access. Overlanding is a bit different. Eventually I reckon bush fitters will adapt as more modern vehicles penetrate African markets, and it is happening to an extent, but I would probably be looking for as recent a Tdi300 as possible if I was in UK and looking for an overland vehicle. I guess Diesel Jim or other Landrover guys would be better placed to tell you if there are any issues with the 2.4 cropping up. Cheers, gil |

the 2.4 has a lot of electronics, although probably not much more than the Td5. but as it's so new there isn't much in the way of aftermarket electronic diagnostic kit available for the like of us general unwashed public to buy. For the Td5, you can get a Nanocom unit, which plugs into the diagnostic socket and pretty much does all that the dealer can do, and you can upload different ECU maps to the engine (if you have them in the first place), so that pretty much makes the Td5 as easy to work on as a 200/300 with a lot more power. For road use, yeah, the 2.4 is nice, but why they went smaller with the engine i don't know! should have gone to 2.8 or 3.0 a few of the people on some of the LR forums i frequent have the new 2.4 and swear by them (time will tell if they start swearing at them! LOL!) and use them off road a lot. |
300 Tdi is still brandnew available in South Africa.....
2.4 is less then 2.5 or 3.0, but this engine has much more power....... Even the bonnet is much higher then the Td5, its not high enough.....if you go offroading a little seriuos, your front axle will damage your oil-lit underneeth your engine......... For overland, find a 300Tdi. Arthur |

Joking apart Tata are doing REALLY well in Ghana, so we bought 7 of their 407 light trucks... When we checked them we found one had a bloody great crack in the turbo housing which had been welded up!!! Brand new vehicle. Then all 7 had to have the starter motors replaced. "When I first opened the bonnet and noticed an in-built light and switch for the engine bay, I should of realized what I was to come." - Tata pickup owner on carsurvey.org!!
