air tools and (sorry) compressors

I realise this has been dealt with to a degree, but the board is quiet and I'm going blind sifting through all the compressor posts.

As my Viair has packed up I'm looking for a replacement set up - for tyre duty and also to run some air tools.

The ideal looks to be an A/C compressor on the engine, but the time it would take to A) find the thing. B) fabricate a bracket C) figure out why it still isn't working D) go back to the scrapyard etc. etc.....would probably be better spent making the brakes work properly.

So, to keep things quick and simple:

Would a standard £100 Viair charging a small tank be enough to power tools? What other bits and bobs would I need (regulator etc.) ?
What would be the minimum size tank ? and minimum power compressor ? and would it fit under the seat of my 110?

Or should I just bite the bullet, roll up sleeves and start digging around in old Mercs at the scrappie?

Richard,

Most air tools require ca 4-6 cfm @ 6-8 bar, with duty cycle determined by the size of the tank. A 20L tank will give you usable pressure between refills to run an air tool for 20-30 sec. You'd need a VEY BIG seat to fit an air tool compressor & tank under it!

Sorry, I'm not trying to sell you anything, but I have put together a kit that can run air tools (Just). You get about 4 seconds of useful air gun time, then you have to wait about 12 seconds. This is a viair kit, compressor, tank, pressure switch, gauge, etc... all you need. It works out at £354 inc vat for the whole lot. You could fit an additional compressor, this would make it have 8 seconds of usable time, and only 6 seconds to recharge the tank.
There is a little more info/detail on my web site, www.mattsavage.com, or give me a ring.
Cheers,
Matt Savage

Can I just say, about Matt Savage;
This company helped me out when I was stuck in Tunisia with a broken water pump. They put me in contact with a guy that they sold spares to in Marseille, he then helped me out.
I'd only dealt with Matt Savage once, to buy a Viair compressor, unlike my local LR dealership that I had dealt with for 3 years, who were no help at all.
I cannot recommend them highly enough to do them justice.
Look out Matt Savage I'm off again this Christmas.
