Buying a Hi-Lux
I'm finally buying a Toyota Hilux now, for a future overlanding trip. I was just wondering if anyone out there has any advice on any hilux - specific faults to look for? I'm aware that the older models are more robust than the newer ones, but which is more robust, the Mk3 (1989-95ish) or the Mk2 (1985-89ish). I'm looking for the 4x4, 2.4 N/A diesel.
Any info would be really appreciated, I've got two years to buy and prep the vehicle, so I'm happy to wait for a good example. Cheers Dan |
In Mauritania our guide drove a 2.8i diesel double-cab Hilux. It went very well with two guys and a young boy, their kit and a 50 gallon drum of fuel.
I would go for a more powerful engine than a 2.4 n/a diesel though. I doubt whether it would have coped nearly so well. |
I've got a 4Runner wich is built on a Hilux chassis. Go for the 3.0L TD engine, either 1KZ-T or 1KZ-TE (ECU version).

Hi Enzo
Does your Surf / 4-Runner have a roof-rack? I'm looking for a roofrack to go onto a Hilux Pick-Up and I was wondering if you knew whether the dimensions of the front part of the roof are the dame for the Surf and Pick-Up. I'm looking to fabricate side-bars to cover the load bay and therefore get a roof to sleep on and plenty of space without the weight... Dan |
Hi
I made a simple one myself: a large piece of marine ply bolted to 4 sets of Thule bars. Email directly if you have any other questions: enzo(at)africa4x4cafe.com |
Er... Thuke bars?
I can't be sure from the photo, are they the square section bars? Cheers, John ------------------ Johnefyn |
Sorry...old fashioned box section "Thule" bars.
