Pros & Cons; HJ60 Vs. HJ61
 

Hello all! I was wondering what is the overall opinion on these two vehicles. Other than the obvious naturally aspirated versus the turbocharged 4.0, what other things would sway a buyer to the HJ60 or HJ61 Land Cruiser? Thanks.

I am! I've got an H60 and you do notice the lack of a turbo on the hills, the 61 fairly flies up. ultimately it is probably the better vehicle but, here in the Uk at least, rarer than rocking horse shit!
either could comfortably pull the bumpers of a landrover!! (stands well back!)

Well, here in the US, both are rare... especially the 61 since it cannot be legally imported here. Anyway, the 12H-T vs 2H would probably be a better question for me. One is more powerful and the other is cheaper to buy but less powerful. For overland travels, what do you guys prefer?

I've never driven the turbo, but heavilly laden it is bound to have the edge, but either is fantastic in sand, very grunty!! the H60 always feels as though it will get you anywhere, just not very quickly!! although good for cruising at 70mph it does lose a bit on the hills, where the turbo would really score. you do get the feeling though that you could tow and artic with it, just slowly!

go for an 80
 

Why not go for an 80 - turbo, coils, more power, more of them available, easy to prep, better drive on tarmac, not expensive of you look around etc etc

...because there aren't any turbo diesels available in USA. My best bet would be to either swap a 2H or 12HT into my petrol 60 (2F engine). I know it's not really recommended for overland travel but I believe it wouldn't be so bad... besides, I love the styling of the 60 series a lot more than the 80!

and that's what counts ;-) It's hard to get worked up by a 80 which for overlanding is merely a whole lot more comfortable (a big factor)

We were having the eternal '60 - 61' conversation the other day while being beaten up by an clapped out 60 with 600,000km on the clock and which ate out of a bowl. A 61 is nice, with the best engine they made (great for deserts and general ploughing duties) but it's not worth double the price you now commonly pay (something which I wonder I may have contributed to) as it's still a leaf-sprung mutt compared to a similarly priced 80 (in the UK at least). In Australia recon 61 engines costs twice as much as 60s - you can find them in Canada too as I'm sure you know. I would try and find a good 12HT but settle for a much cheaper 2H.

One of my H60 landcruisers is currently on ebay, probably one of the best unmolested and un expeditioned H60 round headlight models in the UK!!
