racor filter

I've finally got me a Landcruiser and have started to prepare it for the next trip to west africa, I just saw a used "racor filter" (i think the name in english is water separator or so) and i remember in my years of Dragoman all the trucks had such one between the tank and the filters...
Is it necessary? how many of you have mounted one?
cheers

camaleon,
You dont' say which landcruiser model you have but most models built after 1990 have a fuel filter with integral water separator.

In my '92 LC HDJ80 I have slightly different setup to improve filtration:

- a Racor 500FGSS with 2010TM 500 10 micron element used as main filter and
- a cheap and simple Crossland 522 prefilter, to be replaced twice as often as the main filter.

Hi there, it's an old HJ60 4.0 diesel from '86
i can only see one diesel filter just before the inj. pump...
The one i meant before are as an upside down glass bottle that you once in a while open and clean.

Hi There, depending on the fuel filters you should have a small plastic tap on the bottom - these can be opened periodically to let out any water - if your fuel filter doesnt have this, then try and swop filter model to ones that do - or you could fit a Racor - but although the fuel in West Africa is not the best - high sulphur - I had no problems with water - just make sure you take plenty of filters with you and change them between regular servicing.

It's nice to Overland Pax Free !!!

Hi Griff, when were you in Debenham? I did Southamerica and Africa from late 99 till 2002.
The old Defender had such an openable one, but the one in the LandCruiser seems quite primitiv (maybe not original), I think I will fit the Racor anyway somewhere down the chassis close to the tanks (G could not be wrong!)

what an ignorant! I've been under the car today and I saw a original water separator mounted on the RHS of the chassis, with even a light on on the dash that lights when the filter needs to be cleaned !
so no racor filter needed I guess...
cheers

Hi There Mario, glad to hear you have a water separator already !
Good photos on your Website by the way.

Was with Drago, 2001-2003, did Middle East routes, North Africa and Central America.

How come you switched to TLC for this trip - the Defender you had looked fine !!!

How far South you going ? I was in Ghana this time last year, nice 6 month trip - have to save some more cash for next trip now though...

Make sure you strap your KTM on the back of the TLC for some Dune Bashing....
Cheers
Grif
