Advices for Sweden south not north off road and more

Hi guys,

I am planning this summer to go off-road from Göteborg Sweden (where my bike is waiting for me) to the north of Sweden, maybe even Northcap.

Then I want to go to Russia. Are there any border crossing from Nordway to Russia, or do I have to go form Finland to Russia?

I want to see Murmansk and travel a little bit in the region, if possible in some abandoned cities and old military places.

Then I want to come back to Finland an leave my bike near Helsinki at a friend's place.

Do you have any suggestions, or gps tracks for good gravel roads? I will have 3 to 4 weeks maximum.

thanks in advance for your help and advises!

Don't know about gravel roads in Sweden, but yes - there is a border crossing between Norway and Russia at Storskog. Never used it myself, though, so can't say how the crossing is these days.

I better do not post a picture how your bike looks like now,
otherwise you might change your plans :innocent:

But some more night shifts and it will be in better condition than
last year at the start in UB:thumbup1:

Best regards from your mechanic,
welcome to Scandinavia this summer.

There is a collection of gravel roads streching from southern parts to the northern parts of Sweden. Its called Sverigelänken and made up of a collection of tracks gathered by SOE (Swedish Offroad Enthusiasts). Might be a bit outdated, but a good base for a long offroad trip. Don't have the file available atm, but will try to dig it out later.

could anybody give me an estimation on how much time it would require to go from Göteborg to Nordcap on gravel roads? I am an average off road rider, would ride an average of 8h a day.

I don't know as I haven't ridden gravel all the way up myself, but I am doing about the same trip as you this summer (starting from Oslo, Norway). I have set aside minimum 5, but perhaps more realistically 7 days, as we are quite a band of riders with different levels of skill. We too will ride through Sweden and Finland to get there.

Attached is a collection of gpx/gdb/rbf files grabbed from the Swedish Offroad Enthusiast, dated 2011. See "Sverigelänken.gdb". Do note that some of these tracks are old (+10 years), and outdated. But a good base for free riding all the way up. They are in general described to be suitable to gravel touring and bigger bikes, but some parts could be more of light enduro.

I would say 7 days would get you there without any hurry, but I don´t have any experience of these areas. And you do need an extra day for the guaranteed puncture etc. If you ride Dakar-style, cut that time in half :)

Hi K1322, I had a look at your maps! There is a lot of tracks!!! Fantastic, it will be difficult to choose a way in all these !!!

Do you know which of your GPX file is the most recent? Would you take theSverigelänken.gdb as the basis to set up my trip in Sweden?

It looks like the track "norra sverige" is much more "off road", because lots of section, I don't even see a "road" on my map in Basecamp.

The file "trackPannben_mcstefan" seems quite good as well.

well and the others as well!!

Really excited to start this trip!!! It seems to me that I will love sweden!

k1322 31 May 2015 23:24

Most recent can be seen in file dates.
I'd recommend Sverigelänken as base. It should be more suited for bigger bike, gravel touring style. Although its the oldest, and some tracks might now be tarmac. I have no detailed understanding if the other tracks, some guy posted this compilation on the forum.

Good luck. If you drop by Stockholm and need some help, drop me a message.
