Big loop of Europe - Any tips appreciated.
 

Hi All

I'm losing my cherry with a little 4000 mile 'bimble' around Europe over July and August. The rough route is as follows:

Channel Tunnel to Calais -> Amsterdam -> Lippstadt -> Berlin -> Prague -> Krakow -> Budapest -> Vienna -> Zagreb -> Venice -> Milan -> Monaco -> Bordeaux -> Caen -> Calais.

At the moment, the only things set in stone are that I land in Calais on the morning of the 23rd of July and I'm booked into a hotel in Amsterdam for that night.

At present the plan is to camp between the cities and the hotel it when I get to each city, so I can dump riding gear and mooch about like a 'proper' tourist. If I can camp and leave the tent securely, while I take the bike into the cities I want to visit, even better.

I have no fixed return date, although I do need to be back in the UK by Sept 4th. I intend being as flexible as possible about routes and times, so if you see a glaring error in my planned route, please feel free to let me know.

I'm going solo and don't envisage this being a problem. I've been through a lot of threads about what to take and I think I've got it all covered. I have all the paperwork I need and the bike has just been serviced and a new rear tyre fitted less than 1000 miles ago.

What I'm hoping for are any camp sites or hotel/B&Bs along that route I've mentioned, that anyone can recommend, or places of interest that are worth a detour of a day to visit, please.

If you get to Lippstadt on Friday or Saturday night in July and August they have free concerts in the town square. I went last year and there was a U2 tribute band on, really good atmostphere.

thats a shame...by not going to spain and portugal you are missing out on the sun and some absolutely cracking roads!

I used to live there as a kid ( my Dad was in the Army there ) and I had some of my happiest memories there, so it'll be nice to see the old street again :thumbup1:

This isn't the only tour :scooter:....I was going to head further east too......

I think the next will be Moscow...and then a winter tour to Spain and Portugal maybe :Beach:

if visiting bordeaux is not mandatory, i would suggest going through the alpes starting from menton (next to monacco). Search the web for "Route des grandes alpes", in my oppinion its worth any detour. If you are more of an off-roader, visit the alpes between italy and france.

The "Archies camping" POI have worked very well for me in any country except italy. there we have been totally lost, none of the campsides indicated was actually there (we tried 3 or 4) and in the end we had to take a hotel. Now i normally stick to the bordering countrys for accomodation if possible.

I'm heading to the Balkans from the UK, is the Grossglockner Road worth the cost to travel on it please?

The Grossglockner is well worth it but don't just ride the road. Your entry ticket includes entry to the museums and visitor centres on the road, take the best part of a day enjoying all that the road has to offer.

I'm going to Milan, for sure, but Bordeaux was just a convenient stop on the route to Caen.
I'll certainly look at your route suggestions.

I'd like to do part of the Alps to re-enact the Italian Job opening scene on my Tiger :)

Fit in at least three days to ride the Pyrenees, crossing in and out of Spain - if you don't you ain't lived :funmeteryes:
