BMW Turkey
I'm curently stuck In Khorog, Tajikistan, waiting for parts for a BMW GSA 1200. I believe that the problem is the fuel pump and am told that it's probably the electroninc unit that sits on the top of the pump. A new one is on its way from UK. (two weeks ago) If it does not solve the problem, I'm considering flying the thing to Turkey - the nearest BMW country that may have a computer to diagnose the problem. Anyone know if there's BMW motorcycles in Ankara or is it Istanbul?

The BMW shop in Turkey is swank...the guys in service were nice enought to let me use their lift for a day while I did my own service!
BMW_Istanbul I think your problem could be a EWS antenna ring...there's a major recall on that item...in the US. Check with your home dealer for the VIN numbers that are being recalled. There was also a recall on the fuel pump not to long ago...not sure if your bike is one of them... R1200GS NHTSA Recalls (USA) |
Paul,
Just to be clear...I'm not implying the EWS antenna ring is your problem(EWS will show up on your display if its a problem). I just wanted to make you aware that it has become an issue to the point that BMW NA is pro-actively replacing them on certain bikes. AND that the Fuel Pump as well has had some known issues on certain models. I hope I did not give you too much of a worry...enjoy your time in the Stans...great place! |
Paul, with a couple of bits of wire and some electrical tape you can bypass the controller. I rode the bike for several weeks and 2700 miles before returning to the UK. See pics of my roadside fix at UKGS'er.com

antalya
There is also a full BMW workshop in Antalya if you can get a plane into here as this is a big tourist area and planes drop in for your area on a regular timetable. You would also have a place to stay of course, let me know if you want to take the offer up and best of luck

Thanks guys
Thanks for the messages and offers of help guys. The by-pass fix looks like worth a try if the part doesn't come soon.
The antenna sensing ring did fail, a week before I left UK at the beginning of May and was replaced with an 'upgraded' version. I hope that I don't have to fly the thing to Turkey, but if I do I'll keep you posted. Thanks again. Paul |
Moving again.
Thanks for all the help guys.
I tried the by-pass this morning Tim and it worked a treat. Late this afternoon the parts arrived and solved the problem (I'd pulled the bottom of the controller and the PCB was burnt - no water ingress) I now have a spare by-pass for the rest of the journey. What a brill community. Paul |
