Buying a bike in Czech Rep
 

Hi. I am looking to buy a bike in Czech Rep and ride it via Alps to Nice or Geneva.
The trip is to scatter my brothers ashes at his favourite ski resort (St Anton) and for me to have a little adventure.
I have a deposit on the bike and that's all fine, it's kept at the sellers address until I need it (late Aug/Sept).
Question is how do I get insurance? I am a UK resident so still in the EU (just)
and will be having the bike shipped back from either Nice or Geneva. I will be riding for no more than 3 days, that's about as much time as I can get off.
Is this possible to do? I will get it registered here in the UK when it gets back but for the few days in Europe what insurance cover do I need.
It's a very good bike and quite expensive (£5k)

I was also wondering about registration for those 3 days, how does that work?
How do I prove it's my bike to customs at the Austrian and Swiss borders?

Not sure if Czech laws are the same as here, but: ownership changes at the moment of signing the sales contract and exchanging money, but insurance remains valid until the registration is changed and you are supposed to get your own insurance. Like, you can ride on the seller's insurance in the same way as if he just let you borrow his bike.

In theory to cross national borders with his bike, you would need a notarized authorization; in practice I think a regular free-form letter of authorization from the seller, as well as having the sales contract and the bike's paperwork in hand, will be enough for the cops. (You're very unlikely to get stopped at either the Austrian or Swiss borders anyway.)

I can't seem to get anyone in the UK to insure the bike for those 3 days of riding.
I think I'll get as much paper work as possible and see if the seller will add me to his insurance for a few days.
I think you're right about border crossing, I doubt I'll get stopped but you never know.

It seems like you can actually get temporary export plates in the Czech rep, in some countries it's a standard thing to do which means that insurance shouldn't be a problem, if it's anything like here in Slovenia you just go to an insurance company and ask for a policy for as long as your plates are valid . Obviously you should probably be asking someone official to be sure, especially before committing that kind of cash to buying a bike , but I hope that page points you in the right direction. If the paperwork is legal and the insurance is valid, you don't have to worry about borders.
If not and you are involved in a accident....
Courts in CH and A will have no mercy...

Not sure if the Insurance covers me for theft, I doubt it. Guess I'll just have to get some good locks for overnight stops.

Nah, this'll just be third-party liability insurance, not theft or own-fault accidents.

I never bothered with locks on my Eurotrip... maybe because every good moto thief knows HISS-equipped Hondas like mine are not economical to steal!
