Buying a motorcycle in Germany or Romania
 

Hello travelers!
I am a visiting American and I want to buy a motorcycle in Germany or Romania and ride around the Black Sea as well as the Croatia and Slovenia regions for the next 3 months.
I am aware that an address is necessary, and I have friends in Berlin and Bucharest that can help with that, but...
1- Do I need to actually reside at the address used for registering the bike? (Is using a friends address acceptable?)
2- Is there any advantage to choosing Germany or Romania? ( Ill be in Berlin July 16 to July 21, in theory I could buy a bike next week :-)
3- Do any of you fellow travelers have any bikes for sale right now? (650cc +, I need to be able to ride on the highways, Im thinking GS/Adventure/Transalp, but Im open to pretty much anything)

The above info is for people intending to stay in Germany.

In your case you don't need a proof of insurance, but it might be helpful to have a friend's address in the country. Instead you can get a German "export" rego. The licensing includes German tax related to the length of the validity of the rego. In combination you can also buy an insurance at the licensing dept. for 3 up to 12 months, which allows you to travel in Europe.
What is important for you is that this "export" rego is not just for a one-way trip out of Germany. You may re-enter Germany any time without any problems. This would allow you to buy the bike in Germany and sell it after the trip in Germany again.

Lots of foreigners use these regulations to buy vehicles in Germany and then export them (by road) to their home country without residing in Germany.

Unfortunately I have no information regarding the possibility to sell the vehicle in other countries. You'll have to find out for yourself.

In Germany you will need a address to register the bike. It can be done on a friends name but the bike has to be in your name if you want to cross boarders outside of europa...

BMW is waaaay to expensive but you will find used Honda Transalps in good condition for less then 2000 Euro. Have fun :-)

Not only outside of Europe.
Since Fredski wants to ride around the black sea, he has to cross Ukraina and Russia. Both countries will not let him in, if he doesn´t ride his own bike or if he has a power of attorney by the owner, which needs to be in Cyrillic and be testified by a notar.

just double checking here.. as it is written, is a bit confusing...
I can buy/register a bike in my name(with actually a EU passport) but using a germam's friend address.correct?

No, you have to be a resident in Germany in order to register a vehicle in your name, proven by a Meldebescheinigung.

This is correct, but misleading!
For the export registration up to one yea(if you et one year insurance as well, incl. green card) you only need an address in germany.

Only if you want to register a vehicle for permanent stay in Germany you need a Meldebescheinigung!
