Carring spare fuel spain.
I read on the internet somewhere that it is illegal to carry spare fuel on your vehicle in Spain. is this true?
My bike has a small tank and I wanted to take a spare can of petrol as I will be in rural areas only. Thanks for any advice. |
I have travelled extensivly around Spain and IMHO you will have no problems with getting fuel even with a very short tank range. Were where you thinking of going ?

I am taking a small trail bike to the Picos de Europa and possibly further south on the B roads or Spanish equivilent. My range is only around 100 miles and don't want to have to keep making detours to find fuel.
Thanks for your input. |
fantastic part of the world :thumbup1: crossed over the Picos in late May this year (-5, bloody freezing)
You could ride every road over the Picos on one tank of fuel, but if you feel in need to carry extra I would just carry it regardless of the law, if you do see any police, which I doubt riding the small roads they ain't gonna bat an eye lid Have Fun:funmeteryes: |
I can't comment on wheather it's legal or not but would agree it's highly unlikely to get you into bother.
If your worried about it, simply put your jerry can or bottle in a bag before fastening it on. |
Thanks Mcgiggle and Carl P that is exactly what I was hoping the answer would be.

Off course you can carry spare fuel with you but only in a approved jerrycan like those wich you may find in petrol stations. If you do in another kind of containers you would be in trouble.

carrying spare fuel in spain
I realise it might not be legal, but last year I spent quite a few days in the Spanish Pyrenees with two, 1Ltr Sigg bottles of fuel, in the outside pockets (quite visable) of my Andystrapz soft panniers, and never had any trouble at all. And, I reckon, it was completely safe.

Spain has a remarkably high density of petrol stations, even in rural areas. Far higher than France, for example.

Not sure if its legal or not but i have travelled in Spain extensivally with 2 bottles and a small plastic container strapped to the outside of my panniers filled with petrol.Never had to use them as there are plenty of fuel stops throughout the country.Even with a 100 mile tank range and being in the mountains i doubt you will need to carry extra fuel...but you never know!
This pic is in Morocco...now thats where you would need extra fuel. Notice the bottles at the back! http://inlinethumb56.webshots.com/42...600x600Q85.jpg |
