Chisinau - Tiraspol experience?
I am an American living in Bucharest, Romania. I am interested later in the summer taking a ride through Moldova and then spend a few hours in Transnistria to get some Kvint Cognac. :D My bike is registered to me here in Romania and I have the insurance green card for the EU and coverage of Moldova. Will this suffice?

If I'm not mistaken, you'll have to buy insurance for Transniestr at the other side of the river. Don't remember how much.
Right before crossing into Transniestr there is a checkpoint. I stopped 4 meters before the stop line to let a farmer cross the street, then continued walking pace to the officer staffing the check point. I got a "fine" for not stopping at the line... . 20€. "Protocol" argued the guy... . |
It's been a while since I was there (2007), but no additional insurance other than the Green card was necessary for Transnistria. A 24 hour transit visa cost €0.50 back then. As the others have mentioned, be prepared to pay for various "misdemeanours/papers/whatever" (i.e. bribes).

Went in and out last year, never paid a bribe.
I don't understand why people always pay bribes to anyone. Have some more selfrespect and try to get out of it in another way. I NEVER ever paid ANY bribe and I always got where I wanted. Sometimes it took me forever (Transinstria = 8 hours to get the paperwork done how it should be) and sometimes I had to play stupid etc, but I never paid and I will never pay. If of course your mind is already set to pay, then you have lost at the game... ;-) We even got pulled over in Tiraspol but all was ok. No bribe again. We had to buy insurance though TR was not covered by our insurer... cost me a fortune, 25€ per bike for two weeks I think it was. Can't remember the period but I do remember the price! Just passed through Moldova with my family in a Laguna, en route from Lviv to Odessa.
After Chisinau, we went east hoping to cross over Transnistria - the shortest route. At the Dnestr checkpoint, some 25 kms from Tiraspol, we faced two tanks in camouflage and a steely-eyed officer who reminded me of someone from the Balkan wars. He told us to take some other route. Went south to Tighina and there they were friendlier. Friendly advice, too - the young officer explained that it would cost too much and take too much time trying to go via Tiraspol, although it was only a few kms away. So we took his advice and went south to Odessa over Causeni. We missed Transnistria but Tighina and the people we met, with or w/o uniform, gave me a feel of the strange place. |
