Enter Georgia
Hi
Are there any safe border crossing from Russia to Georgia or do I need to enter from Turkey? Ferry? I'm going from Ukraine to Azerbaijan in a Landcruiser. Thanks for any advices. Tobbe |
As far as I know, no.
To enter Georgia from Russia, you'd have to go through Abchazia, which has not been under Georgian control since 1993. The security situation there is precarious, there are several unmarked mine fields. Abchasia is supposedly closed to international travellers. Citizens of CIS may enter, I heard, but not others. I think your only option is the ferry from Sochi, RU to Trabzon, TR. At least, that's the current state of my research. If you find out otherwise, let me know and post it here. |
No, when we were there over the summer, all the land crossings between Georgia and Azerbaijan and Russia were closed to "foreigners".
One other thing to note, if you are headed to Azerbaijan. Upon entry, Azerbaijan will probably only give you a 3 day transit time for your vehicle. We overstayed our 3 days and stayed instead for 7 days. Upon exiting the country, we had a lot of hassle, but only ended up paying a $7 usd fine. You may want to ask about this when getting your Azeri visa, perhaps they can get you a longer time for your vehicle. But on the other hand, sometimes its easier to ask for forgiveness than ask for permission, if you know what I mean...especially in the Caucasus or Central Asia. Good luck. ------------------ Dave www.mototrekker.com [This message has been edited by davidmc (edited 12 October 2005).] |
