Greece to Austria
I will be travelling from Greece in June and am thinking af travelling through Albania-Montenegro and up the coast. Are there any problems in these 2 countries? Any advice on accomodation outside cities.

I am typing this sitting in a cafe in Tirana the capital in Albania. No problems here at all so far. The capital is very safe as far as I can tell. I have stayed in a town in the south with the name Gjirokaster which is worth a visit, there is a big castle and the landscape is stunning and you can find a hotel here for quite cheap. From Gjirokaster down to the Greece border you should check the landscape for all the bunkers. Read up about them before you arrive.
I will be heading north tomorrow toward Montenegro. Montenegro is quite a big holiday destination and you should have no problems at all driving through. I am staying with an American I met through couchsurfing.com and he has traveled through the whole country without any problems. Hope this info helps. |
Thanks, I can't wait to get on the road.

I traveled that route in 2007 and found no problems regarding accommodations. I didn't have a guidebook, either. Just stop in any small town and they'll have apartments for rent or dirty hotels. Yes. Dirty hotels. But cheap and safe, so who's complaining?

Hi there,
Are you coming to Vienna at some stage? If so, please drop us a line! It would be great sharing some stories at the end of your trip. BTW: We live outside the city! Hanka & Erik Hanka und Erik`s World on 2 Wheels - mit dem Motorrad auf Weltreise |
Take the coast road
When you come up through Albania, enter at Kakavija and go to Gjirokaster. Stay a night. Then go south again for about 5 km and take the turn west to Saranda and follow the coast road up to Vlora. The coast road was all reconstructed last year and is fantastic. Twisty with great views and lots of scenery. The rest of Albania is fascinating too. Traffic is crazy, but no worse than Greece!
