Insurance for UK bike...
 

I'm in the early throws of a short trip (time-wise) to Eastern Europe next year.

Can any of you give me a list of countries in which I'd need to buy insurance at the border, which of these a green card would cover me for and the pro's and con's of a green card as opposed to buying insurance at the border. Many thanks bier

Check your domestic insurance policy, it will tell you where you are covered on your certificate (definitely EU and some others probably). A green card is an extension to your domestic policy and will give you the same level of cover (comprehensive/TPFT?) that you have domestically. The "Buy at the border" policy will just give you the necessary level of cover to ride in that country legally (third party?) but would probably not extend to theft or the benefits of a comprehensive policy but it's probably (not definitely) cheaper than a green card.

Don't know if it's different in the UK, but in Switzerland the "green card" is not an additional insurance it's just a paper that shows in what coutries my "normal" swiss insurance is valid.
I can't get insurance that is only valid in Switzerland.

Also whithin "Schengen" there are no border checkpoints so no place to buy any insurance, if you can get insurance that is only valid in the UK.

I went that way a couple of years ago, check your UK insurance and see where you are covered and you can buy it on the border at all others. It was usually about 15 Euros but one which I think was Kosovo was 50 Euros.
If you are planning to visit all countries in Central Europe go to Serbia before Kosovo, a Kosovan stamp in your passport means you cannot use it for Serbia.

Hi Rachel. As sushi already told you , you are already automatically covered within the EU, at least for now, and in any other countries within the green card system that your insurer has agreements with, such as Switzerland . ( The "green card" doesn't actually materially exist in most places ) The only way to know which Balkan countries require border insurance is by asking your insurer. They all charge around 10-15 Euros except one ( Kosovo , as Mark mentioned, but possibly Macedonia)
Bear in mind that UK insurance companies are sometimes kind of clueless about all this , and confuse automatic third party cover with the premium breakdown and theft cover that they extend abroad for a short period every year and which you otherwise have to pay for.

Thanks Mark. I think Serbia would be before Kosovo anyway because I'm looking at a clockwise loop starting with heading towards Poland.

What I want to do is not give myself a daily destination to reach (as I did last year with Norway), but give myself a plan of simply a number of days (probably 12) and see what happens just 'winging it' bier

That sounds like my kind of trip planning, I was there this time two years ago and the weather was still good but the crowds had gone.

Make sure to go from Kosovo to Montenegro. the ride down the mountains from the border is beautiful. Ins' for Montenegro was 10E 5 years ago. The nicest border guards I've ever met.:cool4:

If u are with Carol Nash a green card for one month is forty pounds, this will cover anywhere u ask for..... So Serbia, Bosnia, Montenegro. Have a feeling that if u enter Kosova and get a stamp it cam cause issues at the border with one of the other Balkan countries......... Am sure someone will jump in to confirm or discount this issue, it's just something I remember reading.
