Thanks everybody. Aberdeen - Ripley is 420 miles, which is a bit too much for a single day for my taste, but it's certainly doable. Tough decision - solstice on the Shetlands then rush down to Ripley, Shetlands earlier than that then take two or three days to get down to Ripley, or forego the Shetlands alltogether.
jonnyingram, I know the 60th parallel is not yet far enough north for the midnight sun but does it stay light at night around late June? Is it worth it to be there on June 21st (any midsummer festivities one would not want to miss) or wouldn't it make a difference if we'd be there two days earlier? |
Hi, I went to the northern tip of Unst about 10 yrs ago. Hitch hiked because there were no buses. Fabulous place. If you get there take a walk in the park. The scenery is fantastic provided the fog isn't too thick, and watch out for the scewers (big agressive birds)probably spelt differently. I wandered into their nesting area in dense fog. They were not happy. It's a bit scary being attacked by things the size of a goose flying at you full tilt.
I was there on the longest day of the year and could read a newspaper at midnight. Keep you eye out for the bus stop set up with a couch and tv along that road. Something different. (if it's still there). All the Islands are great. On that trip I went to the Shetlands,Orkney's, Outer Hebridies and some of the inner islands Mull, Skye. Iona. I'm going over to ride around the north of Scotland at the end of May as the start to a European tour. I'd love to go back up to the Shetlands but I won't have the time. So many places, so little time. ED |
I just did the ferry math, and it would amount to roughly 180 pounds return (Scrabster - Stromness, Kirkwall - Lerwick, Lerwick - Aberdeen). It'd also take at least three days (Scrabster - Stromness on 6/20, then Kirkwall - Lerwick over night, then Lerwick-Aberdeen on 6/22) and leave is with a full day for the Orkneys, two days for the Shetlands and a full day to get to Ripley on the 23rd (ferry arrives in Aberdeen at 7am). It's a bit of a rush but I do like the idea of going up as far North as possible, and who knows when we'll be in that area again, if ever.

I love riding and camping around Scotland, it's just that I've never gone all the way up. Well this years I'm going to do my utmost to change that! |

Hi MJ,

Well, if you decide to do it in June drop me a line ;)
