Neuschwanstein in April
In the last week of April, I have to go to Munich for a computer course at the Siemens offices. After that week I have until Tuesday before I have to go to work so I have a nice long weekend. My plan is to go from my home in the Netherlands to Munich on my BMW F650GS and, on Saturday, after the course, drive from Munich to Schloss Neuschwanstein, near the Austrian border.
I want to find a hotel there and drive home on Sunday (and maybe Monday). Does anyone know how big the chance is that there is still snow on that route ? If there is snow, are the roads cleared enough to ride a bike ? Are there any bikerfriendly hotels in that area ? |
Nobody from South Germany on the BBS ??

Hullo, I'm awake again ;-) Sorry, I didn't see your post.
No more snow, lots of sunshine. Although you never know, what the weather will be like in 3 weeks, but I don't presume we shall have anymore winter. Unfortunately I'm on the road in two weeks time, otherwise I would have loved to join in. The least I can do is to search for accomodation. Try the following link, which is a hotel in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, not far away from Neuschwanstein: Motorrad Hotels in Garmisch - Partenkirchen. Motorradhotels Garmisch - Partenkirchen - Ihr Hotelführer für Garmisch - Partenkirchen. Hotelübersicht für Garmisch - Partenkirchen, Übernachten im Garmisch - Partenkirchen or their homepage. Hotel Farchant Hotel Alter Wirt / Garmisch Partenkirchen: Einzigartig am Fuße der Zugspitze nahe, Garmisch-Partenkirchen Ihr Tagungshotel, Landhotel und Urlaubshotel für die Region Garmisch. Paradies für Wanderer, Skifahrer, Bergsteiger. Germany Good luck! Hans PS: send me a PM or email next time you're in Munich. |
Sorry, didn't see your post :oops2:
Anyhow, I live in Munich and by looking out the window I can tell you that there is absolutely no snow left. Infact, there hasn't been any snow in Munich this winter at all, except for about a week, which is unusual for southern Germany. Currently it's 26°C and it's supposed to get even warmer next week, hence you will be able to enjoy your trip. Infact, I'm thinking about taking you on a nice tour from Munich to Castle Neuschwanstein. There's a couple of kickass roads around here, if you're interested in a free tour guide contact me via mail (martin[at]jungowski[dot]de) or PM and we'll see what we can do :) |
Hi,
as others said, snow is no worry. Today was 30°C in the sun... Anyway, when you go, make sure you take the road that turns off westward between Oberau/Oberammergau and heads to Reutte in Austria. You come along a wonderful lake (Plansee), nice turns and not much traffic, except weekends maybe. have fun, Andi |
Stop it already
This talk of oberamergau and new swanstien sure brings back memories. I was in the US military many years ago in southern germany and rode a 350 ducati (another bike I wish I still had). The ride south from munich and into the foothills of the alps was great. The secondary roads with the perfect paving and great scenery......that was some great riding.

Last time I was down there I stayed in Fussen a town not far from the castle, there is a really pleasant guest house owned by an Irish girl and her german husband, a 5 minute walk from the town centre the accomodation and service was very good and the price very reasonable. I cannot find the detail/card I had but the details will be in the local tourist office but there are plenty rooms to be had in the area.

Lodging..
...in the Fuessen area....I can only recommend the Kurhotel Ruchti, Alattseestrasse in Faulenbach!! Stayed there many times...family run place...great food...friendly and very helpful people!! Just love this place because it is very quiet, last house along that street...check it out!

Cancelled
Thanks for all the info.
Unfortunately, the Siemens course in Munich that I was supposed to go to is canceled for my collegue and me. :-( I hope I can go this autumn so I'll use the info about the hotels anyway. |
Too bad... the weather still kicks ass :thumbup1:
See ya next fall (if I'm still here, probably not though - might be staying in Detroit for a year starting August) |
