New Ferry route UK to Norway
 

Today chief executive of the port of Tyne Authority announced excellent profits and growth in trade. Along with this they have opened negotiations to re instate the ferry route between North shields(Newcastle) and Norway and hope to be able to confirm and have a route running later this year. This is great news for those of us who miss this ferry route to give access to the Arctic areas of the North, The Scandinavian countries and Northern Russia.

You can still go from Immingham to Brevik (Norway)
DFDS run the service, but it's very expensive.
I asked for a quote for a 4x4 towing a 6 meter caravan

They do 2 sailings a week, and I was quoted NOK 10,597.50.
At 9,24 NOK = £1.00 its works out at £1,146.

I DON'T THINK I WILL TAKE THEM UP ON THAT PRICE.:nono:

So, just wishful thinking for the moment (the headline got me excited, that a new route has actually opened which apparently it is not!) ..but don't get me wrong, I'd love to be able to cross from Norway straight to the UK. Did that once, to go see the TT in 2005, from Bergen to Newcastle.

The DFDS line is (or at least it used to be) mainly for trucks, with limited number of cabins... and yeah, that kind of service is probably more expensive than a regular ferry.

Tremendous news - I used the old route a lot in years gone by, and it was superb.

Lets hope it comes back on line soon !

The Port of Tyne is keen to resurrect interest in a RoPax service (carrying both foot passengers and vehicular transport) between the Tyne and ports in Norway, as the Port has enjoyed an unbroken tradition of similar services spanning over the last 140 years. The Port is currently working on a feasibility consultation in conjunction with NewcastleGateshead Initiative and the equivalent of the Bergen Tourist Board, to formally record interest from both tourist and freight related supply and demand and it is hoped that this will be something that can be used to encourage other ferry operators to consider providing Scandinavian routes from the Tyne.

Very quick response from PoT. Below is a summary of the latest progress provided by email:

Port of Tyne is indeed working hard with various organisations to try to re-establish the ferry route to Norway. Progress is being made and we are hopeful a service could be deployed at some point next year although there is a way to go before that is a definite and any number of factors could prevent that actually happening....

Certainly on the passenger side, the interest remains strong and we have a good understanding, we think, of the demand...As ever though, the passenger traffic is very seasonal and can only be a part of it. Year round freight movements are important to keep the service in place. With a difficult economic environment, this is one of the tricky things in trying to make the numbers add up.

Please, if anybody knows of the Norwegian coast route to Nordkapp please give an estimate of the prices for the fjoord crossings.

I have been in contact with DFDS about cabins and asked if there was pans for a Newcastle to Bergen crossing but they said, " Not in the forseeable future".
It is a shame we do not have a Rosyth to Esbjerg or the Lerwick to Bergen.
Has anyone dealt with Passenger Cargo for anywhere, this would be of interest.

Has anyone stuck the bike on a pallet, sent it over by truck, flown out & picked the bike up in Norway?
I've been looking at flights,£200 return.Just need to get the bike there!
