Shipping/riding a sidecar to the UK?
Our plan is to ship the rig to NZ for 6 weeks or so, and from there to the UK. I have a good friend working in Birmingham, and would like to leave it with him for 6 months+. Would plan to ride UK and Europe (likely all in the EU).
The rig has the car on the right (registered in California, USA). I have heard insurance can be a fright, but are there other issues should be alert for? Would anyone know if having the SC on the right would prove an issue? Any links, references, or advice would be greatly appreciated. regards, greg |
Some years ago I have been to the UK from Holland (where I live) with a sidecar on the right and that was no problem.
In fact it is easier to drive a bike with (or without) a sidecar on the left side of the road then a car because you have a better view around you and are a little higher then most cars. |
Sidecar on the right in a left hand world
Having rode right and left hand mounted rigs here in the USA you will notice the freeway off ramps are a blast. When your sidecar is on the outside of the corner you can smoke into a off ramp. The passenger might get a little unsettled when you pull out to pass on a two lane road tho....you have to stick the sidecar out first before the rider can see. Should be fun.

Did you end up shipping the Ural and how much was it? Sea or Air? I am in a similar situation. Thanks! |
