My trip for the next year and my last year of preparations
I plan to ride with a BMW 650Gs Dakar and camping most of time. I’ll fly (me and bike) from Montreal and start the trip from Paris. I plan to ride Europe, East Europe then Scandinav countries dont know yet if ill go to iceland (we’ll see the $) after cross through Russia to visit Mongolia, China, India et heading to Indonesia we’ll see after what happen. So any tips, advices, contacts, things to do and see, etc will be very appreciate. Thanks |
Hey,
I was thinking about doing a similar trip. The problem is that it's not possible to get through China on a motorcycle by yourself. You would have to hire a guide, which can be extremely expensive. Not to mention the fact that you would also have to get a Chinese visa(difficult but not impossible) and a Chinese drivers license (they don't accept IDP). You would have to take a Chinese drivers license test, which is in Chinese only, so unless you're fluent in Chinese, good luck. Without being able to get through china, you won't be able to ride you bike to India either unless you A) ride through a warzone or extremely hazardous area or B) pay someone in Tajikistan(really shady country) to put your motorcycle on the back of a truck and drive a couple hundred miles through China(still have to get a visa) to Pakistan, where you would ride to India, and then repeat the whole process coming back. I haven't even gotten started on all of the fees it would cost to visit those countries (stans and china have very high visa fees) along with whatever border and transportation fees you would incur also. In reality, it's a huge pain in the ass and not really worth it. Then, you have option C, which I would highly recommend. Purchase a motorcycle within China and India, and then simply sell it when you leave. You can get a motorcycle there for dirt cheap $1000 usd for good quality one, and you avoid SO MUCH hassle in the process. Also, to be quite frank, you're wasting thousands of dollars by flying your motorcycle from Canada to Europe. Why not just go to Europe and purchase a motorcycle and then sell it when you leave? Only saying this because I'm planning on doing Europe by motorcycle later this year, and there is a service in Ireland where you purchase the motorcycle when you get there from a buyer and then they help you register it and everything. It makes it very simple. Just trying to help as I have spent HOURS researching this myself. Regards, Andrew |
having ridden most of the area the previous poster wrote about most of it is BS...also flying my bike from North America in ten days, costs $735US
so i'll be in europe when you arrive next year, from there i was looking at a similar route, very easy to plan and do if you know where to look. look in travelers seeking travelers on here there are loads of groups crossing china and nowadys its around $1000 and all paperwork/ licenses/ docs are done or assisted for you i'm on my second rtw and until you really get out here you don't realize how easy it is...hardest part is leaving home stay in touch as you get closer to your leaving date Paul |

I'm planning a similar journey for next year as well. I wanna head through east Europe, Russia, Mongolia and end up in Wladivostok finally. Are you going to travel alone actually? Maybe we can meet up sometime on the trip and travel across unknown regions in Siberia? Regards Ken |
