Trip to Austria
Got some holidays left to take and thinking of having a ride from the UK to Austria at the end of September,for about 2 weeks.
Will get the Euro Tunnel over to Calais and head in that direction. Has anyone got any good gps routes for roads and trails to ride while over there? Ill be on my tiger 800xc Also whats the rules with camping there? Do you need to stay at a campsite? Thanks |
It might be colder than you think. Much of it seems high up, although I came up from Merino in Italy to Garmish in Southern Germany.
Make sure you don't speed as I believe the fines are very heavy. If camping, ask anywhere where you see more than nine plum trees, the owner may well have a still :) and plum brandy is just the thing to keep you warm. |
I was thinking it might be getting a bit cold by then. I'll have a look at weather forecasts

you should always stay at campsites. Camping in the wild is not allowed. And keep your speedometer in view, especially in tyrol there are many permanent speed traps (tech-grey boxes, hardly to identify in time). And the highlights for driving: Google for Hahntennjoch, Namlos-Tal, Kühtai, Großglockner, Gerlos, Zillertaler Höhenstrasse, Furka-Joch, Arlbergpass, Flexenpass and much more. I loved this road... Rode it one way, then back, then back again... Hit it early and you'll only encounter cyclists which don't hamper your lines too much ;) |

In this year i had very similiar trip on my Tiger! ;D. If You want to geat around Austria dont forget about Grossglockner HochalpenStrasse(23 Euro for entry for all day long;/ ), Silvretta HochalpenStrasse between Bludenz and Landeck, also very nice road near to the border with Italy and it is called Passo di Stale (road number L25 in Austria) and photo below were taken in this place. There is no problem with campsite in Austria, also there is a lot of "free rooms" in a reasonable price.

Austria has many fabulous 'biking roads!
Here's a hotel I stayed at earlier this year. Great roads right on the doorstep - including the fantastic Nochalmstrasse ; a toll road (but free with tourist card from hotel if you stay 3 nights AFAIR). John, the hotel owner was very helpful with sat-nav routes to download and weather advice. Garage and tools available gratis too. Here's a possible route for the journey down on the fantastic 99 - a road that deserves an ode. Avoid the A10 'cos there are two tolled tunnels - and well, it's a motorway! There seemed to be lots of campsites in Austria but I didn't use any. As mentioned, be cautious camping at altitude. Also, it may be the case that some campsites close at the end of the summer season. Certainly some were slow to open at the beginning of the Summer. If you want any more route suggestions in Austria let me know. e.g. a day trip to Slovenia Triglav National Park returning through Italy was worth doing twice! I should have some GPS tracks too. |

If you want a great campsite at a bargain price ( ~ 7 Euro Inc Hot Shower) I can highly recommend Alpencamping near Mallnitz.
