Tyres - do I need spares
My wife and I are planning on riding from London to Vladivostok via Mongolia in June. Do I need to take spare tyres or can I get them along the way?
Also should I consider knobblies or are standard tyres fine for Mongolia |
Suggest you add up the mialages and then think about where you'll want tyres. Possibly contact HU communities near the places where you may want tyres.
E.G. From Vladivostok you go to somewhere you can get tyres. So estimate say 10,000km from a tyre and then track back from Vladivostok for 10,000km. Find the nearest place to there that might have tyres and check avaliblity there, or the place before that. Repeat. Knobbie tyres will not last as long as road tyres. Tyres will last longer on dirt roads than on tared roads. Your choice. If it is mud or sand you'll want knobbies, for tyre life you want road tyres. |
Thanks Frank
Measuring backwards is a good idea |
According to the book "The long way round" the roads in Mongolia don't even deserve the name, and are a very tough ride. So you better count on knobbly tyres.
