UK to Cyprus...
I'm looking to ride from the UK to Cyprus on my bike, we will be a group of around 4 and have approx 24 days to make the trip with around 5 days spent on Cyprus.
I have travelled a lot around Europe but never that far east. What route would be the best- Greece then ferry to cyprus or turkey then ferry to northern cyprus. Can you cross into greek cyprus from northern cyprus?... Are the ferries running from greece to cyprus?... Whats the issues riding thru Croatia/bosnia?.. Any info would be greatly appreciated.. Many thanks.......Clive.. ps....my trip pics here closethegate's photos and albums on webshots |
as far as i know you can not cross from/to Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus to Greek controlled part of Cyprus. You may take ferries from one of the Greek Islands (ie, Rhodos-but will be too expensive. try to take one from Greece).
there are ferries from Tasucu or Alanya (only in summer from Alanya) to Girne (TRNC) hope there will be an agreement between the Turkish and Greek part and we all can cross both sides. peace.. ozhan u. |

Hello
The border between North and south is not really closed. I know that citizens of Republic of Northern Cyprus can pass to south and vice versa, the Citizens of the South can pass to North. I am not sure if the citizens of European countries can enter from North to South? This needs to be checked. Regards |
Thanks for all your replies so far, am looking at a few options on how to get to Cyprus...
My trip will be in Aug 2009 to attend my daughters wedding and decided to make a bike trip of it as well... Still a long way off but enjoy doing the planning for these trips.... Antonis.....thanks very much for your kind offer, will probably be contacting you for info on cyprus at some time if thats OK...... Clive.. |
Hi Pegasus,
Just wondering how you are getting on with your travel plans ? I have decided I would like to travel from Northumberland to Cyprus ( prob Limassol ) I will be travelling alone so this is a big thing for me, I plan to go in three weeks time. I thought about travelling by ferry from North Shields to Rotterdam, then down to Athens ( I have a Sat Nav ) then by ferry to Limassol. I was roughly guessing at 4 days to get there. Be very interested in what you think ? Cheers el-keith |
Crossing from Turkey
Hiya Im planning a trip to Cyprus and found this from Tony Carr -
Arrived! I had a brilliant ride from Istanbul across to Ankara and then down through the Taurus Mountains (brilliant twisties after all the miles of highway) and breathtaking scenery. Total mileage on this leg was 638 Miles which took 14.5 hours. The weather east of Istanbul was very bad, torrential rain and a temperature of just 2 deg Centigrade. However, dropping down through the Taurus mountains the temp started to rise and was a very pleasant 20 deg at the port of Tasucu from where I embarked to Cyprus on a mainly freight ferry. The trip took 8 hours. Crossing the border from North to South Cyprus was the easiest crossing of all and took only 5 minutes. Let me know if this is still any good as im planning for Mar 08 or ill work with you and we can come up with a route. |
Crossing the border in Nicosia is very straightforward and I've done it myself a few times. A word of warning. The standard of driving on the Greek side has to be seen to be believed. It's truly appalling. A lovely island though especially when you get away from the Brit invasion of Paphos.

Turkey Cyprus Ferries
Its possible to take your bike from Turkey to northern cyprus, check www.minoan.gr cost around €140 last summer. Last year Louis ran a service to Israel but not sure if it will run this year. Its a summer service only look for destination 'the holy land' .... call the booking office in London for further info...
Crossing north to south isnt a problem, you need to buy insurance in the north at the point of arrival cost €25, your European insurance won't cover the north ! South not a problem, just say you're visiting the south and will return home via Turkey otherwise the customs lady between north / south will get all confussed and tell you its not possible to leave the south by ferry to Greece... there again by now she might now its possible !! I'm back there in May 09 and looking for a way to ship my bike back to Belgium or the UK... trucking company maybe... any ideas .. Thanks Matt |
Clive
I did this trip in 2005 going via Turkey into Northern Cyprus. My write-up can be found here: http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...t=uk+to+cyprus Wish I was coming with you! |
Good Trip!
Hi Tony :mchappy:
Nice to read about your trip and you seem long overdue for another one. How about France, Spain to Morocco. Are you still doing the 1st World War Battlefield Tours weekends and when is the next one? What moved me was hearing your "lump in the throat" account of the Last Post at the Menin Gate, which I would love to experience and is something everyone should! Ride safe and catch up soon. Cheers Chris |
