We're considering returning to London from Gallipoli/Turkey, either:
a) north through Bulgaria, Romania, then a stopover in Prague, or
b) northern Greece, Albania, Serbia/Montenegro and Croatia.

Due to time constraints, either route needs to be more of a transit "through" rather than with any significant stopover time. Others here and elsewhere have mentioned the bad dirt roads and various issues. We are not adverse to dirt, it is probably not wise on our ST1300 to attempt too much very badly potholed gravel  .

Can the majority of the "bad" roads be avoided by taking alternative routes, or was this the one-and-only main "highway"?

Any advice on how quickly (duration) these routes can be ridden?

Appreciate any advice.

Thanks all so much

I've been off-line for a couple of months but to get all this info/comment is great. I am currently trying to find info from the British embassies/consuls specific to my situation. I'm of Asian descent and have an Islamic name therefore I just want a little advice from them about whether I might get any particular hassle at the borders, in particular in Croatia, Montenegro and Albania. It's not a huge issue, it's never been a concern to me in the past, but I just want to be sure as I will be travelling on my own.

The FCO in the UK can't give me any specific advice and have suggested I contact their offices in the relevant countries which I am in the process of doing.

Hi there asgoo.

The people in the region of former Yugoslavia are pretty much cool about names and religion so don't expect any problems regarding your name/origin.

Should you need any more info regarding the Balkans, don't hesitate to contact me.
