wee euro tour help?????
any riders got some advice or suggestions for a wee 7-10 day euro tour starting either chunnel or zeebrugge? two up with wife on my r1150gs which i am going to collect this saturday! just started riding last summer after a cancer scare - been thro' a yamaha sr125 & suzi bandit already!
any advice welcome, greetings fae bonnie scotland, adi |
What are you looking for in this tour-ette? Landscape/History/Culture etc. I've a bias towards the Teutonic mindset so Germany/Switz springs to mind, but you've perhaps other preferences?:mchappy:

7-10 days will get you a decent tour round the Alps or even as far as Slovenia. As has been said before though, it all depends on what type of place you're looking to visit. People will post here telling you of their favourite week long tour areas. Me :) I'd head over the Alps and into Slovenia. You get the fun in the Alps and, hopefully, a nice warm beach in Portoroz when you get to Slovenia.
A shorter run would be down to the Vercors in France which is a nice looking place to take your bike. Basically though, get off the ferry at Zeebrugge and head into the Alps and you won't be disappointed. Alternatively, you could head for the Horizons unlimited meet in Germany in 4 weeks time. see http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/mee...ermany2008.php Jim Quote:

When are you planning on going? If it's in the next month or even into June the alps might be a bit hard core. There's still a meter of snow outside our flat and most of the interesting passes will be blocked for a while yet. Have a look at www.alpineroasds.com

OK I'll assume you don't know :) It's Scottish for small.

I see... Definitions of wee (+scottish) on the Web: bitty: (used informally) very small; "a wee tot" a short time; "bide a wee" very early; "the wee hours of the morning" make: eliminate urine; "Again, the cat had made on the expensive rug" before google came up only with: "Western equine encephalomyelitis"... :confused1: |
Google is indeed your best friend, or maybe we on HU are :) Bide a wee means to stay a little while. OK "bide" means to reside or stay :) EG "where do you bide" = "where do you live"
or "bide there" = "stay there" :) Anyway, I best not hijack this thread anymore with Language lessons. ;) Jim Quote:

i think biker_harris may be more friendly!! |
Hi Bomber, forget the southern ports pop down to Newcastle and get the DFDS boat to Bergen. July is the right time of year to visit the Fjords. Stunning scenery, no language problems and no crap Euro exchange rate. If you're camping or stopping in cabins then it won't be too expensive either.
I like the name Bomber Harris. If people ask if you've been to Germany before just say "yes loads of times, but I didn't land!" |
If i was you i wouldnt be too ambitious. If swmbo is new to biking then break her in gently. Maybe a ride down to britany?

There are hundreds of ways through the Alps to Slovenia. I'm probably heading down that way again in July and was thinking of taking 3 days to get there via Como. On the way back I was thinking of heading into the mountains for a play on some passes like San Boldo (I only want to see the tunnels with the traffic lights:) ) I'll play with my satnav programme, mapsource, and plan a nice run through a few passes.
The only problem doing this is, I keep getting sidetracked because there are so many places to visit. If it's your first time and your wife isn't used to bikes you could always try a shorter trip like the Vercors. take 2 days down then a couple of days playing then 2 days back. Check out Grenoble Cycling Pages - The Vercors and see the Vercors and Grand Goulets I see you're geting your bike on Saturday, If the strike is called off and you can get petrol, you could try a distance run on Sunday and see how your wife likes a few hundred miles on the back:) Quote:

Treat yourselves
Hi Bomber,Why not get the ferry from Rosyth to Zeebrugge and avoid going down through Englandshire? I live in the Highlands and have done it a few times (and the ferry!) and it's really great. A bit like a floating hotel I suppose. Look on the Superfast website for info.
