What not to miss in NE Turkey?
Hi all,
I am close to Trabzon at the moment. Just visited Sumela monastery. I will have around 4-5 days time in this area before I continue to Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and further east. So, what are the "must see"-places here? Thanks in advance. Br, Hemuli |
Hi, road (mainly dirt) from Of, ulzagon, Caycara to Bayburt is excellent. Road of Stones is worth a visit. Andy

Hello Marco,
Hope you are enjoying your trip and all is going well.. Let me tell something though all depends to your hobbies and way of biking you like... Nomore historical places besides sumela..Tranzon is a business and university seaside city with ferry services to sochi...Prices much expensive...New wide seaside road is boring..Just some uphill plateaus on hills on different roads for each... A few km. after south of maçka,zigana pass and milli park(national park) for camping..then bayburt, ispir, yusufeli, artvin route on the mountains is wild, natural, nice countryside and adventourous..Local food pure, natural and tasty in small towns..You can meet bear and follow them for some free honey in historical beehives on trees... These are most natural, pure countryside of Turkey. İshakpaşa,noah's ark, meteorite lake are at doğubeyazıt, close to Iran bordergate. Best Wishes Not..Benzin is most expensive here and that's why relaxing and filling energy in the area close to georgia border gate is recommended.. Others are just ideas.. Trabzon to Dogbiscuit is 625 km.. https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=tr&i...ed=0CAUQ9w8wAA Trabzon to Kemaliye (Road of stones) is 392 km. Found really really nice road yesterday Sumela monastery and road #915 | Where is Hemuli?
It reminded me of the Ligurische Grentzkamm Strasse in Italy... Let´s see what today has in store for me :scooter: |
İshak Paşa Palace near Dogubayazit is worth a visit, it is closed on mondays. Luckily I was allowed in today, because the president of Iran had just been allowed in?!?!!?!?!

Plan tomorrow to do some maintenance for the bike and cross to Georgia on Thursday. You are a bit too far for a beer today... Do you plan to visit Nemrut Dagi? Few photos of my current trip can be found from signature link. |
