africa twin fuel pump problems

Hi guys, I am having fuel pump problems on my africa twin rd07, seems to work fine until I start to work it a bit then I stop and check the pump and it is running on continuous and not reaching pressure and shutting off, when I tun the fuel cock off and pull the inlet line off, there is lots of gas. I just replaced the pump yesterday in frustration, and same story.
When it is running on like that if I keep driving the motor starts to starve for fuel??
Would really appreciate someone sending me in the right direction to get this solved.
thanks in advance, Steve :confused1:

Strange that it is also happening with another pump.....
Did you test the bike with the pump bypassed (connect inlet and outlet of pump with piece of tube, tank has to full)?
If the bike runs fine without the pump, i would suspect the fuel cut-off relais, or the second pump is also broken.
Good luck!

did you check the fuel filter?

Thanks guys, the filter seems fine, lots of fuel flow when I disconnect the line.
today I am planning to short circuit the pump first then the filter to see what happens,, I will track it down.

Hi...

How's that Yukon winter ??

Anyway. Ditch that crappy AT fuel pump and get a vacumn pump asap....

Or a better quality electric one. Facet or something.

maybe it is not the fuelpump but the carburetors...
try cleaning and continue you quest

Had the same problem, Just change the fuel pump for a facet one, here is the spec for the one you need: Facet Fuel Pump / Pompa Benzina Facet - Detailed item view - RUGGED ROADS - Honda BMW KTM Motorcycle Accessory

The problem of the original fuel pump is linked to the magnet inside that kind of "lock" itself... Change it for the pump above, you won't have the problem again.

Hey,
Basically change the pump. They simply go on the AT. If that is not the cause now it will be. The facet is the common one but there are other options. Go the XRV.org.uk, seach for facet and there will be step by step instructions.. The one thing i can suggest is leaving the rubber mounting in Very hot water for as long as you can ... it will then just "slip" on the the Facet... and only cost you 1/2 you skin on your fingers...
Cheers

Thanks for the feedback, but after putting a new original pump and 2 different facet fuel pumps on it I have to conclude that it is NOT the pump.

Now I have a new Facet on there, and to try to figure out what is going on I replaced the fuel lines on either side of the pump with clear plastic lines and guess what, when I stop the engine after a 15-20 minute ride, AIR PUSHES BACK FROM THE CARBS??? all the way back to at least the external fuel filter??? emptying the lines and pump of fuel. restart the engine and the system only gets air and a trickle of gas.
I have placed a wire-tie under the fuel cap to ensure there is no vacuum at the tank side,, It has me baffled and ready to pull hair.

Any new suggestions on where to look would be much appreciated.

Have you checked all your carb breathers are clear and in the correct position ??

Not trapped or badly routed etc ?? Same with your petrol tank breathers.

flow_yrc 16 Mar 2013 19:07

Hi Ted, Yes the small T effort between the carbs is clear and the tubing out the bottom is as well.
When I blow air back through the tank vents you can feel the air coming out the filler opening of the tank, so they are clear as well. (and like I said I forced the vent cap open to prove it is not a tank vacuum)
It is an amazing amount of air to push the fuel back through the system so far as it does???

happy I am not dealing with this in a snowbank in the Yukon, I am in Guatemala where parts are a problem, but can be got.
What does the switch on the side of the carb do?? the manual calls it an air switch but doesn't elaborate??

I'm not sure...

It's been a few years since I've owned one.

Are all the pump pipes in the right places too ??

I'm having difficulty trying to picture it in my head from memory !

Have you asked on the XRV forum ?? Many AT owners/boffins on there.

I am in Mongolia and am having this exact problem. How did you end up fixing it?
