Africa Twin RD07 Weak Rear Brake Advice
 

Hi, I have an RD07 Africa Twin and shortly off on a long trip two up with my wife. I find the rear brake is weak considering a lot of the weight is on the back but is this normal? I have changed the fluid, replaced the pads and cleaned the caliper pins so it floats ok.

Hey mate,
Yes AT rear breaks are kinda weak, but they are okay for two up fully loaded with no issues.

Make sure there is no air in the line AT rears are a PITA to bleed properly.
Make that the pistons are moving okay (they can seize or worse leak).

Also, as a general rule, standard break lines only last 2-3 years, before stretching out which = lower pressures = weak. Get some good braided lines for it and you will be amazed (rugged roads have em).

Best thing to do is put very good pads and change the lines (as a general rule)

What Xander said, but also remember that breakfluid break down over time. The fluid tends to absorb water (even from the air) and then becomes less viscous, resulting in a spongy feel. It's good practice to replace break fluid completely from time to time

I had bleed my 89 NTVs brakes a few times but when I took the pistons out of the calipers full of mayonnaise.

Verdict to ensure maximum rear brake effectiveness grease pedal pivot, install 'aviation' line, remove pistons for a good clean and install HH pads.

We have been on the road for nearly 6 months now, through Argentina, Chile, Bolivia and now in Peru. The rear brake is a bit weak but it has been fine travelling over all sorts of terrain. In fact the bike has been great - a very good choice!
