CRF 250X
Any feedback on the new electric start CRF would be interesting.

They're fantastic bikes, I've had one for a couple months now. They're extremely light and handle like a dream, they make incredible horsepower for their displacement and emissions restrictions, and they have really nice ergonomics.
But I wouldn't even consider using it for any sort of 'adventuring' though - they're not built to withstand long maintenance intervals, nor would I expect anyone to start manufacturing 'adventure' accessories for it. There are already reports that the top end doesn't last very long on these bikes. People with the R model are already talking about short ring and piston life. Of course, everyone's idea of adventure differs, and since you're posting here I would imagine you are interested in it. If your idea of adventure is spending a day or two trailriding, then it would probably do just fine. Wright |

Thanks for the feedback. I'm thinking of retiring my trusty XR400 and getting one for use in the UAE. I've briefly tried the non-electric start version which was terrific fun. I was really wondering whether the X version with headlamp and other small differences felt capable of, let’s say, a trip back from the UAE to the UK, via Yemen, Djibouti & Sudan etc. when it’s me who retires. You answered my question but I might still do it anyway! :-) |
Well, anything's possible...
You may just not make it there on a top end, and it will not be comfortable at all! Cheers, Wright |
The CRF 250x is quite a machine. As a Honda mechanic I get to work on a few. Top end wear, valves that tighten into the head and require reshimming and if you use too slippery of oil (friction reducing aditives)the clutch will slip.
