How often do i really have to change is oil in a xr650r
Hi,
i'm looking at buying a xr650r to do a very long adventure ride. i'm just wondering how often do i really have to change is oil insted of the 600km range the manual says. i'm planning on riding pretty much everywhere in the world so there might be some places where i can't change the oil for a while. |
don´t sweat it - its a Honda and it´ll forgive you changing the oil when you can! you can easily go 6,000km if you´re touring rather than rallying/racing.

oil change
I wouldn't buy a bike if the maker said change the oil at 600kms. That's unbelievable...

Use synthetic oil and you should be fine ,it does not degrade as quickly as mineral based oils .

Iv been riding and repairing Xr's for about 2 years now. The book recommends about 600 miles (not km) for an oil change but you have to remember that the XR isnt sold as a touring bike, its a desert racer, offroad machine. In these conditions a bike which only holds about a litre of oil will wear that oil out very quickly.
For normal touring conditions i reckon every 1000 miles will be ok as long as you use a good quality of semi-synthetic oil. The engine is forgiving , but dont punish it !! |
I was looking at a thread on either advrider or thumpertalk and two guys had been RTWing and one went 20k kms and the other 6k kms without a change. They said the oil was in acceptable condition and they used mobil 1 I think. Im just passing that on, I cant vouch for it.

I can vouch for it, but remember to put 2 litres in rather than 1!

Something to think about
www.bajadesigns.com has an oil resevior and pump kit, which allows more oil in the bike and circulates it better.
|
the kit is for the CRF450, the 650R has all the oil it needs
