NX650 engine wanted

I'm preparing an NX650 Honda Dominator for a Siberian trip next year and have just found that the top end has been starved of oil and that it's basically terminal. Does anyone know of a NX650 for sale and does the XR650L engine fit in a Dominator frame?
Cheers
Paul

I have just put a Dominator engine in my XR650L. I bought it already reconditioned for £300 on Ebay. However, second hand engines are always a risk. I was lucky and mine runs really well.

I still have the old engine which I intend to rebuild and recondition for a spare.

As for your question... The engine is EXACTLY the same. Well, apart from the two oil feed pipes at the bottom of the engine. They are very easily changed over though. Some engines have the air-cleaner ports on the head and some do not. That's the only difference. They will run just the same.

What year is your Dominator. I think the pre 1990 ones might have had slightly different gearing but I'm not certain.

If you look at the FMX 650 and the SLR 650. They also share this engine.

You probably don't need a whole engine either. Sounds like you just need a top end. What exactly is the damage. I priced up a top-end rebuild some cost about £300 with a new piston, rings, chain, gaskets, valve seals etc. That's if your cams and cam guides are okay ????

NX650 Engine

Thanks for the reply. It is the top end that is terminal - the head, cam followers/arms, camshaft, piston etc etc. The bottom end seems to be OK. There is an 88 engine on ebay at the moment for £395 88,700kms. My bike is a 96 (NX650T). I'll keep trawling the internet and see what I can come up with. If you do hear of anything, I'd appreciate the info. Cheers. Paul

Seen that one on eBay.... Its too much for age and miles. If you're patient you'll get something decent for 300. It might actually be cheaper to buy a good running second bike. Take the engine, keep the relevant spares for your trip and sell the rest on eBay.

Cheers Ted - that's the route that I'm going down. So, currently looking for a reasonably priced NX650 and will rob the engine and sell the rest.

I found a spare bike so will rob the engine and put it into the prepared frame. Thanks for the input Ted.
